The Alabama Supreme Court has declared that fertilized eggs are persons, hamstringing in vitro fertilization (spare the rod, spoil the child!!).
Republican legislatures who have introduced personhood bills back home are now running away from the end of IVF. If the fertilized eggs frozen away in liquid nitrogen tanks are person how do you protect them? If the liquid N2 evaporates it’s like murdering a thousand babies!
There are some 30,000-50,000 IVF babies born each year in the US, mostly white babies.

This is an opening salvo in the white, Christian nationalism movement to force America to become a Christian nation. White, Christian nationalists believe that US laws should be based on Christian values and the ideal that only a Christian can be a real American. These positions are anathema to Constitutional ideals.
Even Donald Trump criticized the Alabama ruling (but may change his position depending on political winds). On the other hand, Trump creates the political winds for nuRepublicans, so his disapproval may squelch much of the support for zygotic personhood.
The practical problems that follow from declaring that fertilized eggs are persons are manifold. For example, more fertilized eggs are lost than eventually are born. How do the authorities determine if the baby was murdered rather than died from natural causes? Every miscarriage would have to be investigated. IVF would be too impractical and 10s of thousands of families would not be able to have babies. One solution would be to have more than one class of fertilized eggs. One class (IVF) of zygotes would be deemed expendable.
