People’s Republik Of NYC Cracks Down On Pizzerias Due To “Carbon Pollution”

I wonder how well this will go over with all the Warmists in NYC, considering how important pizza is in NYC and the Tri-State area

Mama Mia! NYC rules crack down on coal, wood-fired pizzerias — must cut carbon emissions up to 75%

Mamma Mia!

Historic Big Apple pizza joints could be forced to dish out mounds of dough under a proposed city edict targeting pollutant-spewing coal-and-wood-fired ovens, The Post has learned.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection has drafted new rules that would order eateries using the decades-old baking method to slice carbon emissions by up to 75%.

“All New Yorkers deserve to breathe healthy air and wood and coal-fired stoves are among the largest contributors of harmful pollutants in neighborhoods with poor air quality,” DEP spokesman Ted Timbers said in a statement Sunday. “This common-sense rule, developed with restaurant and environmental justice groups, requires a professional review of whether installing emission controls is feasible.”

The rule could require pizzerias with such ovens installed prior to May 2016 to buy pricey emission-control devices — with the owner of one Brooklyn joint saying he’s already tossed $20,000 on an air filter system in anticipation of the new mandate.

All for a cult related scam

“Oh yeah, it’s a big expense!” said Paul Giannone, the owner of Paulie Gee’s in Greenpoint. “It’s not just the expense of having it installed, it’s the maintenance. I got to pay somebody to do it, to go up there every couple of weeks and hose it down and you know do the maintenance.”

Certainly, all those pizza places and other joints which have these types of ovens (I assume by coal they mean charcoal, like people use in the backyard) won’t pass on the costs to consumers, right? Hopefully they’ll have an extra line on their receipts showing this.

In fairness, this can reduce actual air pollutants from those types of ovens. If you’ve ever used a charcoal grill, you know what I mean. CO2? Just stop, cultists. Also, I’m not necessarily a fan of those really hot wood ovens they use for pizza. I think it cooks too fast. I like those big metal ones which are in the 400F range. Not a big fan of that really crispy crust. Still, government needs to be so dictatorial.

Only government’s with way too many on the payroll have time to worry about this shit. Fire about half of them.

Who can reasonably oppose cutting wood and charcoal smoke pollution in a city?

That said, New York (and New Joisy) pizza is the bomb.

One of my college students decades ago opened Brooklyn Bridge Pizzeria in St Louis (he was from Brooklyn) and was very successful. Great pizza.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Wood and charcoal fires add dangerous particulates to the atmosphere which are easily captured. So, why not?

Do you really believe that reducing air pollution is leading us to “hell”?

The description in the NY Post makes no sense. The way to cut CO2 emissions is to cut the the amount of fuel (charcoal, wood), and not by a device on the exhaust, and in any event it’s unlikely these ovens generate much CO2 in the grand scheme of things. It does make sense that installed filters would reduce particulates from wood and charcoal fires.

The restrictions were first announced in 2016 to be met by 2020 (but were delayed because of the Trump Flu pandemic). I couldn’t find the requirement to cut CO2 emissions by 75% in that document, not to suggest that the conservative tabloid NY Post was mistaken or dishonest in their reportage.

It’s also possible someone like the Mayor misspoke and it was carried by the stenographers in the media.

      Dear Elwood:

Life is about trade offs. Show me that these new controls will do more good than harm.

You can’t. This is just another move by the Left to control us.

      • Elwood P. Dowd says:

        James,

How will reducing smoke particulates in a densely populated urban area do more good than harm?

Show me that particulate air pollution does more good than harm. You can’t.

You can argue that delicious pizza is a good. True, but capturing particulates on a filter won’t harm the pizza. The added cost? A dime a pizza with every competitor around having the same burden wouldn’t be much of a cost for cleaner air.

What harm does wood smoke cause? Besides the particulates, wood smoke contains the carcinogens, benzene, formaldehyde, acrolein, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Wood smoke is bad for your lungs and heart.
