Politico Basically Admits That Lockdowns And Closing Businesses And Such Doesn’t Work

There have been lots of different methods tried early on to limit the spread of Wuhan-Flu. California went the draconian route, and still is trying. Yet

From the link

California has had some of the toughest restrictions in the country to combat the coronavirus, from a complete ban on restaurant dining to travel quarantines and indoor gym closures.

It hasn’t been enough.

America’s most populous state has become one of the nation’s worst epicenters for the disease, setting new records for cases, hospitalizations and deaths almost every day. Things are so bad in Southern California that some patients are being treated in hospital tents, while doctors have begun discussing whether they need to ration care.

The turnabout has confounded leaders and health experts. They can point to any number of reasons that contributed to California’s surge over the past several weeks. But it is hard to pinpoint one single factor — and equally hard to find a silver bullet.

So, perhaps all the restrictions weren’t necessary, because it sure looks like a resurgence is happening all over the world, not just the country

At more than 100 new daily cases per 100,000 residents, California’s case rate is second only to that in Tennessee, according to the nonprofit tracking site Covid Act Now — though it’s a state that does not mandate mask wearing and allows indoor gatherings of up to 10 people. The website Covid Exit Strategy shows a 97 percent rise in Covid throughout California, which has gone in the opposite direction from its West Coast counterparts, Oregon and Washington.

And Tennessee is just barely ahead of California, despite not having mask mandates. But, people voluntarily wear masks in Tn, because it’s this year’s fashion statement, you know.

After early success, S. Korea sleepwalks into virus crisis

South Korea had seemed to be winning the fight against the coronavirus: Quickly ramping up its testing, contact-tracing and quarantine efforts paid off when it weathered an early outbreak without the economic pain of a lockdown. But a deadly resurgence has reached new heights during Christmas week, prompting soul-searching on how the nation sleepwalked into a crisis.

The 1,241 infections on Christmas Day were the largest daily increase. Another 1,132 cases were reported Saturday, bringing South Korea’s caseload to 55,902.

They had some social distancing restrictions, and then loosened them, but, did not destroy their economy. And, like pretty much most 1st world nations, and, heck, 3rd world nations, they are seeing a big resurgence. There never was a reason to ruin economies. And most often, it was those with no skin in the game, those who weren’t missing paychecks, those not having their jobs deemed non-essential, who pushed the hardest for all the hardcore lockdowns and such.

Maybe someone can explain how in order to stop the spread of Covid-19 $25,000,000 in additional salary for the House of Representatives will help.

    It’s in the bill.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Suspiciously, it was falsely claimed that the original $2.2 trillion CARES bill had $25 million in House pay raises. It was false then. Is it false now?

Please show where in the unsigned bill that expenditure is described. It amounts to a $57,000 (33%) increase in Representatives’ salaries.

In fact, Congress even prohibited expected automatic salary raises of 2.6 percent, or $4,600, for members in its appropriations for the 2020 fiscal year.

      • drowningpuppies says:

        Well is it false now?
        C’mon Rimjob…

DickBreath made the claim. Can he support his claim that the new bill contains a $57,000 a year pay raise for the House of Representatives?

          No, of course not.

          C’mon DickBreath…

Number of small businesses governors killed: In the millions.

The number President Trump closed: Zero.

Sure, blame President Trump. Why not? He only gave us the best economy in 50 years. The Swamp and Wall Street took care of that.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

More like 100,000 closed small businesses, mostly in the service and “foot-traffic” dependent businesses. But even large corporations, e.g., airlines, have been hard hit laying off tens of thousands of workers after the CARES act PPP funds ran out. These are people who longer drive to work or go out for lunch. The decrease in travel (business AND tourism) killed the airport services industries, restaurants, parking lots, shuttles, travel agents, destination hotels and restaurants, cruise lines, Las Vegas, Disneyland, casinos, sporting events… Tourist destinations are crippled, not because of lockdowns but because people don’t wish to die from Covid.

As repeated time and again, the key to the open economy was to control the pandemic. Americans aren’t as stupid of conservatives believe. People are staying home out of legitimate concern and caution. Blaming the mayors and governors (only Dems of course) for the recession is lazy and a cheap shot, but we understand it’s become the right-wing meme intended to distract from the poor federal response (President AND Congress). Regardless of what the governors did, the economy was going to take a major hit.

The right-wing conspiracy tale that China created and spread this virus is plain stupid. The right-wing conspiracy tale that the pandemic is a massive hoax to harm the self-destructive trump is plain stupid. The right-wing conspiracy tale that letting nature take it’s course is plain stupid, unless one thinks the marginal gains of open bars and sports is worth 3 million dead Americans.

  3. Hairy says:

Lockdowns and masks can only reduce transmission not completely eliminate it
Just like seatbelts also do not completely eliminate injuries and deaths
And just like Reagan mandates all states to require seatbelt use(was that “draconian” ?) I believe governments should also mandate health measures when needed

    • gitarcarver says:

And just like Reagan mandates all states to require seatbelt use…..

Nice try, but Reagan did not and could not mandate drivers use seatbelts.

I believe governments should also mandate health measures when needed

You can believe what you want.

That doesn’t make it right. If people don’t want to have health insurance, that is their choice.

We all understand that unless it deals with the murder of children, the left hates choices and wants government to control everything.

After all, all the left has is hate.

  4. The Left Are Traitors says:

Supposedly the Wuhan virus originated in Red China but we all know it was created by Trump who did absolutely nothing to help stop it by refusing to do what the “experts” advised, not sending respirators, hospital ships or field hospitals to NYC. He also tried to downplay the flu so as not to panic people which we all know is wrong. As we have seen, panic and hysteria work best!

So the whole crisis is Trump’s fault and if you don’t believe me ask Comrade Elwood, or Hairy.

Whereas Comrade DeBlazzio and Il Duce Cuomo sent the elderly to die in fear and loneliness locked down businesses driving tens of thousands out of business and threw millions out of work and into despair in food lines.

And Now Nazi Pelousy and her band of grifters want to send each American a check for $600 totaling about 20% of their $900 billion give away. IOW they want to send $720 billion to their pals and Americas enemies rather than us. Cool, eh?

Normal people are embarrassed when they are caught in an error, much less an outright lie. The grifter, on the other hand, sees no difference between the truth and lie.

The truth is, this sort of behavior is far more common on the Left than on the Right or on this side of the great divide. Naomi Wolf is just one amusing example. There are thousands of people like her working a grift on left-wing audiences. Blacks, gays, Jews, trannies, socialists, you name the group on the Left and there is an army of grifters making a good living peddling nonsense to these people. It is fair to say that the Left is just a carnival of nonsense sold by carnies to the true believers looking for grace.

      Stop whining. It’s unbecoming.

We know of no one who has suggested that trump created and released SARS-CoV-2.

People DO claim that trump could have done more early on.

He could have taken the pandemic seriously from the get-go. He could have advocated precautions early on. He could have invoked the DPA for the production of PPEs and testing supplies. He could have urged Congress to make the resources necessary for direct payments to suffering citizens.

trump hasn’t the capacity to be a leader. We knew that going in and hoped he would never be challenged with a major crisis.

The US is the richest, greatest and most advanced nation on Earth but we’ve had arguably the worst response to the Covid pandemic.

Economically, small business revenues cratered starting in March but started to recover steadily until mid-summer when again revenues started to stall.

Democrat officials screamed bloody murder over the “early on” measures Trump ordered, like banning flights from China. They urged people to go out and congregate in places like Chinatown. Morons. They were so anti-Trump, they are the reason stronger early measures were not taken.

Of course, they’ve memory-wiped themselves about that.

  5. gitarcarver says:

He could have taken the pandemic seriously from the get-go.

He took the pandemic as seriously as Obama took the H1N1 pandemic which killed more children than COVID.

He could have advocated precautions early on.

He did. He was labeled a racist for doing so. (And don’t forget that local governments told people not to worry.)

He could have invoked the DPA for the production of PPEs and testing supplies.

No, he couldn’t. The left has tried to use this as a failure, but that is not the truth.

The DPA requires that the Federal government own the patent to the object being made. Trump tried to get Congress to allocate short term uses of patents, but the House blocked it. Secondly, PPE’s and testing supplies were initially part of the “non-essential” businesses that some state governments shut down. (It should also be remembered that New York, which was bashing Trump for not given them ventilators (which never became needed) had actually sold the ventilators they had purchased after the H1N1 pandemic.

Pelosi and Sanders admitted they withheld relief bills to try and hurt Trump in the elections.

Also, it should be remembered that the WHO and Trump’s advisors bounced all over the place on what should be done. Fauci has admitted he lied:

Recently, a figure to whom millions of Americans look for guidance — Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, an adviser to both the Trump administration and the incoming Biden administration — has begun incrementally raising his herd-immunity estimate.

In the pandemic’s early days, Dr. Fauci tended to cite the same 60 to 70 percent estimate that most experts did. About a month ago, he began saying “70, 75 percent” in television interviews. And last week, in an interview with CNBC News, he said “75, 80, 85 percent” and “75 to 80-plus percent.”

In a telephone interview the next day, Dr. Fauci acknowledged that he had slowly but deliberately been moving the goal posts. He is doing so, he said, partly based on new science, and partly on his gut feeling that the country is finally ready to hear what he really thinks.

Hard as it may be to hear, he said, he believes that it may take close to 90 percent immunity to bring the virus to a halt — almost as much as is needed to stop a measles outbreak.

    Source: New York Times.

Economically, small business revenues cratered starting in March but started to recover steadily until mid-summer….

And the basis of that recovery and then stall? Local and state governments shutting businesses down.

    Stop whining. It’s unbecoming.

Stop hating. Ooops. Sorry. It is all the left has.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

After all, all you trumptilians have is trump. But not for long, LOL!!

      • ruralcounsel says:

Time will tell. It takes a free and fair election to elect a new POTUS. So far, we haven’t had that. Over half the country thinks the Dems rigged the first election. They cheated. We know they cheated. They know we know they cheated. So they are screaming their denials as load as they can, amplified by their propaganda arm (Media) and trying really, really hard to NOT cover the facts that are coming out. I’ve got news for you, Democrats. It won’t fly. No matter what your fake administration tries, the country knows you aren’t legitimately elected.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

None of what you typed is true, no longer how many times you stamp your feet and shout it.

A majority of TRUMP voters feel/believe that trump was cheated out of his rightful office, the rest of the nation, meh… Although we expect the trumpists to continue to complain long after trump has cut a deal.

There has been precious little credible evidence of fraud (although several Trump supporters have been charged with actual voter fraud). Hand recounts have not changed the result.

That “Trump got more votes than any sitting president in history!” is not evidence (since Mr Biden received more votes than trump).

“Trump won more counties than Biden!” is not evidence since counties/precincts don’t vote, people do. Acreage doesn’t vote, people do.

“Trump was ahead at one time but still lost!” So?

Sid Powell, Lincoln Wood and Rudy Giuliani have done Trump no favors. Wood claims Chief Justice John Roberts is part of the anti-trump, Deep State, satanic, pedophilia ring and that’s why the Supreme Court hasn’t declared Trump the 2020 winner.

Sid “Kraken” Powell proclaims publicly (but not in court) that long-dead Venezuelan strong-man and computer genius Hugo Chavez designed Dominion/Smartmatic voting machines/software to switch votes.

Even trump-appointed judges laugh them out of court.

Republicans felt/believed that their decades long voter suppression programs would allow their minority to steal a national election and are now inconsolably angry. Americans “crawled over broken glass” to vote against trump.

  6. The American Patriot says:

“He could have taken the pandemic seriously from the get-go.”

You actually don’t think Trump took the Commie flu seriously from the get-go? You really are a partisan fool. Trump was called all kinds of xenophobic names when he stopped air flights between the US and China by leftists. Meanwhile Nazi Pelousy and Bill DaBazzio were holding Chinese New Year parties in the streets of LA and NY without masks or anything else but you’re okay with that because they’re fellow commies. Just because was trying not to instill the fear, panic and hysteria you leftists wanted you say he wasn’t serious. Were the mayors of all the black controlled blue cities not taking it seriously when they let their animals of the leash to bur, loot and murder people? I don’t think so.
