Earth’s tilt may speed up global warming – study
The study, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, was led by Richard Levy from GNS science and Victoria University of Wellington, and Stephen Meyers of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States.
The team of scientists were studying how the Antarctic ice sheet is influenced by changes to how the Earth moves in space.
Richard Levy said that the study confirmed a connection between these astronomical changes and changes in the size and extent of the Antarctic ice sheet.
“If your tilt is high, basically it points the poles more directly at the sun so they get warmer, so at a high tilt you’ve got much more heat coming in to the polar regions.”
The ice sheet is buffered by these warmer waters by sea-ice but as emissions continue to rise, that sea-ice is slowly disappearing, making the ice sheet more vulnerable to melting, Mr Levy said.
“Where we sit right now, CO2 levels in the atmosphere are 400 parts per million – they haven’t been that high for millions of years – human activity, anthropogenic activity have pushed CO2 up to the point where we’ve actually jumped back into the miocene, back into this time when CO2 was high such that sea-ice disappeared.”
Just think, all we have to do is have high taxes, wealth redistribution, and global communistic government and all will be well.
Professor Levy gives you a excuse for warming that is not CO2. Take it!
There are many reasons why the earth warming are not a result of CO2.
The earths normal tilt is 22.1 to 24.5 degrees. Today, the Earth’s axis is tilted 23.5 degrees from the plane of its orbit around the sun.
Even NASA has written articles proclaiming the weight of the ice sheets is causing the earth to wobble even more.
Perhaps it is. But the wobble of the earth is in the vaccum of space where there are no gravitational forces exerted upon the planet substantial enough to obey the physics we experience inside the dome of atmosphere.
In short if the earth were to wobble 40 degrees its not going to fall over and most think the reasons the earth wobbles at all is a result of massive impacts one of which ejected enough material into space causing the moon to form.
When you think about this article and what they are proposing they have taken junk science and put it into a paper proclaiming the weight of ice is shifting the wobble of the earth when in fact during the ice ages we had ice covering from the north pole to Florida a MILE THICK FOR MILLIONS OF YEARS and it did not create catastrophic changes in our wobble.
The physics for doing so are not there. The earth is weightless in space, the only gravity exerted upon it is caused by the moon and the sun along with planets. Additional gravity is actually felt by other stars within the galaxy as well as other galaxies in the universe. Still inconsequential. The reason an apple falls from the tree is gravity. The reason the earth tilts is not shifting ice on the planet, but rather massive impacts of comets and meteors over the last 4 billion years.
Stupid is as stupid does I guess. Notice how the entire article then ends with 400 PPM’s of CO2 is going to cause the earth to fall over and were all going to die.
Our large moon helps to stabilize our axial tilt, but it still has some variability; that’s been the case for a few billion years now.
It’s also true that earth’s magnetic field is very much overdue for a pole reversal; what that will do to our magnetic shield when it happens is unknown, but could be devastating. It might cause us to lose some percentage of our atmosphere, the way we believe Mars has lost atmosphere, to the solar wind, so we might need some of that extra
global warmingclimate change to keep us from going into a serious ice age.Of course, if our axial tilt changes a tenth of a degree, or the pole reversal occurs, it will all be Donald Trump’s fault.
The Cove has it all wrong. The point of the article is that changes in tilt changes polar ice, not the other way around.
