Trump goes after antifa, sparking fears about crackdown on dissent
An executive order labeling antifa as a domestic terrorist organization is spurring pushback from critics across the ideological spectrum who say President Trump is laying the groundwork to crack down on those with opposing views.
Short for anti-fascism, national security experts say antifa is not the sprawling, organized group that Trump has claimed but rather a loosely formed ideological movement, one at times embraced by protesters who have violently clashed with police.
“Antifa is a movement like feminism or environmental activism, as opposed to a distinct group,” said Faiza Patel, director of the Liberty and National Security Program at the left-leaning Brennan Center for Justice.
“This is not like a group that you can sort of target with financial sanctions in the same way you would with a foreign terrorist organization. So then that leads you to the question of, well, then what does this executive order actually do?” she said.

Teach, for once I disagree: I’m all for Trump sending federal forces to Portland to deal with the black bloc terrorists. Leftist cities like Portland are a cancer on this nation; cancer must be dealt with, else it metastasizes to infect and eventually destroy other areas, like Boise.
This isn’t a problem that’s going to burn itself out while leaving everything else untouched.
It is against U.S. law to use federal troops for law enforcement.

George H.W. Bush. Sent federal troops to Los Angeles in 1992 to restore order after the riots that erupted after a jury acquitted police officers who were caught on camera beating up Rodney King, an African American.
Herbert Hoover. Sent U.S. troops to disperse a group of World War I veterans in the Washington Mall in 1932.
Dwight D. Eisenhower. Used the military to enforce federal civil rights laws and prevent violence at Little Rock Central High School.
John F. Kennedy. Called in the military to enforce desegregation at the University of Mississippi.
Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon. Used the military to control riots during the civil rights and anti-war movements.
Ronald Reagan. Deployed the military to assist in combating illegal drug trafficking.
Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Deployed the military to assist in law enforcement efforts.
None of whom have been locked up, and no one’s thinking about locking up the ones still alive.
