I’m not sure if it helped much, but, I deleted an old theme that serious errors in formatting. It’s not active, but, never know how it’s code can affect WordPress as it and plugins update. I might try using a WP default theme for a day or two.

The site itself and the individual articles load somewhat slowly, but not too bad. But adding comments is very, very slow, and sometimes still collapses. I suspect the problem is somewhere in your commenting function.
I wonder if the backend is just too jammed up with comments, since I have had this WordPress site since like 2006? I wonder if I should try implementing Disqus, see if that makes a difference.
