Some argue that Russia’s military is so inept, and Putin so determined to win that unless the west surrenders Ukraine to him he is likely to start nuking someone, somewhere.
But if Russia is going to win regardless of support from the west, why would Putin nuke anyone?
And if the west gives Ukraine to Russia, why would it take ten years for the Russian military to recover? They would have Ukrainian materiel and troops. There are Russian minorities in the Baltics now that Putin can use as an excuse to liberate slivers of Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and even Finland. It’s the excuse Russia has used for decades for annexing regions in and around Ukraine.
Our military strategist from Missouri wrote:
Shades of 1950, and the “Who lost China?” argument. According to Mr Dowd, if the US declines to provide $60+ billion in more aid — and who can know how much more after that? — in money and equipment, then the West has ‘given’ Ukraine to Russia. The idea that Ukraine ought to be responsible for its own defense seems not to exist.
Of course, the same argument was used concerning South Korea and South Vietnam, though it was called the “domino theory” then.
Why would it take ten years for the Russian military to recover? They’ve lost a clear pile of equipment and soldiers in Ukraine; equipment takes time to rebuild, and soldiers have to be enlisted and trained. More, Russia’s mostly failed military strategy needs to be studied and updated.
Vladimir Vladimirovich is, in the end, no different from any other dictator: he depends upon at least some public support, and the support of the military. The last thing that the generals would want is to be led into yet another invasion without being completely prepared for it, as they’ve learned that lesson the hard way. More, as time passes, the older generals will be replaced by the lower-ranking generals and colonels of today, the ones who’ve learned the lessons of Ukraine most personally. They are not going to support invading anyone else until they believe they stand a good chance of success.
It’s pretty difficult to argue that Russia would have the Ukrainian war materiel available while also arguing that we need to provide them with more, or they’ll eventually lose. Much of what they have now will be expended, and, since it is Western supplied, it won’t be things for which the Russians will have spare parts or the proper caliber ammunition. The troops? Would Russia be able to count on any of them?
In 1940, Josef Stalin used exactly that argument, that Finland was previously a duchy of tsarist Russia, and invaded. The Soviets finally prevailed in the Winter War, but not after being strongly repulsed, with enormous casualties. In effect, the Soviets drowned the Finns’ defense in oceans of blood, losing far more soldiers and more equipment than the Finns, but the Finns ran out of everything.
That’s what’s happening in Ukraine today! History is repeating itself, and eventually Russia will win, because Ukraine is already throwing everything it has at the Russians, and has achieved only a stalemate; their purported counteroffensive of 2023 achieved almost nothing. We can replace some of their equipment, but unless you are suggesting we also replace their killed and wounded soldiers, they will eventually run out of those. Russia might lose more, but they’ve thrice Ukraine’s population.
