Comrade Bernie Wants Concessions From Gun Owners, 99.9% Of Whom Aren’t Mass Killers

Why should any of us concede anything? If someone goes on a stabbing spree, we don’t blame the knife. We don’t ask for concessions from chefs (oh, wait, bad example considering what has been going on in London). We also do not concede anything because we know that the gun grabbers will demand something else, then something else. It never ends, until we get to a total ban on private ownership of firearms

Sanders seeks ‘concessions’ from gun owners, though ‘99.9%’ would never commit mass shootings

Sen. Bernie Sanders says “99.9 percent of gun owners” would never commit gun violence, but wants them to make “concessions” following the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.

The Democratic presidential candidate has somewhat distinguished himself from his Democratic opponents, who have proposed sweeping gun control measures — but the U.S. senator from Vermont took a more conciliatory tone to gun rights during an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast on Tuesday.

When the conversation turned to gun rights, Sanders expressed condolences to those who were killed or wounded in El Paso and Dayton but noted that nearly all gun owners would never commit such violence.

“All that I ask of the gun owners — and you’re absolutely right, 99.9 percent of gun owners would never in a million, billion years think of doing these horrible things — but at the moment that we are living in, I think we are all going to have to make some concessions to the reality of what’s going on, and that is that there is a small number of — call them whatever you want, depraved people — who are prepared to do that,” Sanders said.

“I wish I could say in the best of all possible worlds, yeah, you can own any weapon you want and so forth and such. We’re not in the best of all possible worlds. We’re living in a world where we’re shocked every day by horror,” he added.

Bernie hasn’t been exactly as staunch anti-gun as most liberals, and was even backed by the NRA back in 1990. Anyhow, what concessions does he want? He doesn’t say. Most Democrats are yammering about universal background checks, which wouldn’t have stopped most of the mass shooters over the past 10 years. The Dayton nut passed his check. Pretty much since the local police did not take warnings from other citizens seriously and report them. All the gun laws in California haven’t really stopped anything.

In fairness, Abby was a Planned Parenthood director turned pro-life. But, let me trot this out again, a reasonable compromise on gun control

Anyhow, in the spirit of compromise, I’ll again offer a few things, updated a bit

  • Reinstatement of the original 1994 Assault Weapons Ban with a 5 year sunset to see if it works
  • Ban the manufacture, sale, and transfer of magazines higher than 10 rounds starting the date the legislation passes
  • Require background checks on all weapons purchased at gun shows before the purchaser takes ownership of the weapon (the so-called gun show loophole)
  • Background checks would be required for all weapons purchases and transfers, including private and from family member to family member. If it has been more than two months since the last purchase, another check is required
  • No more than one firearm purchase at a time. No more than one per month
  • Ban private ownership of all automatic weapons, excluding those few who qualify for the the ATF stamp.
  • Ban bump stocks
  • Heavy criminal penalties for converting a weapon to automatic
  • An automatic 5 year sentencing extension any time a firearm is used in a crime, with no time off for good behavior
  • Allowing school employees to have access to firearms on school property and/or more armed security on campus
  • A national 7 day waiting period for the purchase of all handguns, 3 days for rifles (with a provision that in certain cases, such as someone who’s life is being threatened can get an immediate check and permit from law enforcement. Provided they pass the check)
  • (new for this list) Red flag laws, but only if they are explicit within the law as to what is covered and who may make the complaint. There can be no bureaucratic/executive rule making, no chance of mission creep. Any additions must be passed by 2/3rds of the Legislature. And anyone who is accused shall have their day in court within 48 hours, with the burden on the State to prove their case

In return I want

  • Ban all late term abortions (except in real cases where the mother’s life is in imminent danger, and the doctor must legally sign off on a specific, and legally binding, form)
  • Require parental notification for abortions for all women under 18
  • Require parental consent for all under 16 (which could be over-ruled by a judge)
  • Disallow all federal funding for abortion, including at Planned Parenthood. Want one? Pay for it yourself
  • Do away with all federal funding for operations that perform abortions
  • Require a 48 waiting period from the time a woman requests an abortion
  • All abortion facilities must adhere to medical facility guidelines. They should be at least as safe and clean as a veterinarian facility, should they not?
  • Yearly inspections of abortion facilities
  • Doctors against abortion should not be forced to perform them

I think that’s eminently fair, a nice compromise. What do you think? You liberals would be willing to put some common sense reforms on the abortion industry for some common sense gun control reforms, would you not? This is stricter than I offered back in 2013.

Of course, let’s face it, abortionistas won’t agree to any of this. Despite abortion appearing nowhere in the Constitution, unlike firearms and other weapons (why can’t I carry a sword around?), they feel that abortion is a Right, and there should be zero restrictions nor regulations on it. They’ve pitched massive fits over requiring an abortion facility to have medical standards. They do not even want inspections. Ever. Abortion on demand is the #1 commandment of the Democratic Party.

Realistically, for gun reforms, I’m actually good with everything except the first two, assault weapons ban and magazine restriction. I could compromise on the latter at 15, which would cover the vast majority of handguns which come with larger mags.

I’d also like to see New Jersey repeal it’s smart gun law, which has kept them off the shelves and limited research and development. If a proper smart gun could be developed that would work 99 times out of 100, and could fire at least a 9mm bullet, that would be great.

Oh, here’s one more compromise: all people carrying firearms to protect politicians, celebrities, etc, may not carry any weapon that other citizens carry. So police, FBI, Secret Service, etc, as well as private guards, can only carry 10 round magazines. No assault rifles. Certainly nothing automatic. If a citizen cannot buy it, no one can use it for security work.

    Here is my “compromise” position:
    1. Repeal the national firearms act.
    2. Disband the BATFE and repeal all of the laws and policies that they currently enforce.
    3. National primacy of firearms law that prohibits states and localities from passing ANY regulations of firearms. The Constitution grants this power solely to the Congress.
    4. Require all police and military forces to comply with any weapons legislation.

    And I really don’t care how many of your own kids you abort or why.

    Alternative “compromise”:
    Pass a national identity law where everyone carries a single form of ID that proclaims what their rights are. Right to vote, right to own a firearm, right to peacefully assemble, right to freedom of speech, etc. You could also include any professional licences like practice law, CPA, medical credentials, etc. So, you want to buy a gun? show your ID. Background check is done! Anything that happens like getting confined to prison, and your card gets replaced with one that had fewer rights. Want to vote? Show your card.

      A national ID card with all your personal information registered with the federal government? Great idea, but “show me your papers” is kind of 20th Century isn’t it?

      You could lose a card or (horror) get caught outside your home without it. Wouldn’t an implanted chip be more reliable, or a barcode tattoo that the TSA, ICE, vote officials, creditors, federal bathroom attendants or gun sellers could scan and get all your info?

      If your status changes you wouldn’t get a new card, but the database would just be updated.

        There is no moral superiority over using a state issued ID that we ALL already have and use without complaint (driver’s license) over a federal issued one. Now you are just arguing to be arguing. If you claim background checks should be good and universal, my proposal does that universally, but now you still find fault with it. I suspect I could agree with you completely and you would still argue. Some people are like that. I have heard there are a whole lot of people in pain and it shows by how much effort they put into arguing with total strangers on the internet. I hope you feel better some day.

    I actually am all for giving the left a bone on this one. I think its important for the coming 2020. I have been for some MODEST NON SIPPERY SLOPE GUN RESTRICTIONS FOR SOME TIME NOW. The GOP needs to be seen as doing something on this issue or they are going to get beat hard in the 2020’s especially in local elections. I get it, the slippery slope and so forth.     However a 72 hour waiting period is not unreasonable. At all. Period. It is only unreasonable in the minds of libertarians who want very little government accountability.

    NOT A BAN BUT A VAST REDUCTION IN THE SALE OF ASSAULT RIFLES which IF you want to buy one there would be a more stringent background check and would require a 30 day waiting period. Still not unreasonable. I have ordered a travel trailer which took 6 weeks to be delivered. I have set up an appointment to see my dentist which takes a month. There are tons of things that take a month. Waiting a month while a more stringent background check is performed and allowing a potential crazy to cool down and rethink shooting up a mall is perfectly acceptable.

    I still am not sure what they want in regard of a background check. But I would say this…… any semiautomatic weapon sold should have a more rigorous back ground check and at least a 1 week waiting period. Bolt action, Revolvers etc should come with the standard background check and 72 hour waiting period.

    I just dont get why everyone is in this gotta have it right NOW mode. I guess its the age of instant gratification. I want it and I want it now.

    However to the Elwoods of the world. The right can write a bill like mine and by the time the demos get finished with it it has a 1000 more conditions, rules, laws and fixes for anything ranging from more funding for the blue turtle in Mexico to the spending of 20 trillion on windmills forcing the right to once again STOP and say NO in a vote.

    IF YOU REALLY WANT some checks on guns, stop, bite your tongue and agree on 2 or 3 of the most important ones that are not violations of the second amendment then go to work on the next 2 or 3 things you want. ITS CALLED COMPROMISE… It used to be something Americans did with each other.

      And although the NRA is teetering, they still control the GOP, lock, stock and barrel. Wayne Lapierre called trump yesterday to express the NRA’s displeasure with trump’s wavering.

      McConnell will never let ANY firearm bill to come to a vote, but his re-election in 2020 is not assured, and neither is the GOP’s Senate majority.

      I live in the middle of the country, in a reliably red state, and have hunted for decades. It’s my experience that the mass of Americans would agree with your proposals. The GOP elites would not.

      1. It’s never enough. After this law passes, the same activists groups will still be pushing their same old agendas. After the Brady bill passed, the Brady corporation didn’t close up. they continued activism. It’s just half a loaf and then another half, and then another half…
      2. It is all pointless. Or at least the point of the laws is not what the activists claim. It has been tried. We don’t have to guess the outcome. More guns = LESS crime. No laws that have been proposed would have mattered even a little bit in any of the mass murders that have happened. Doesn’t anyone remember Tim McVeigh?
      3. It seems obvious that the entire point of gun regulation is disarmament of the civilian population. The only governments that want that to happen, intend to do something so monstrous that they fear an armed backlash.       4. The entire point of the 2nd amendment is to protect the civilian population from #3 happening. As long as the government doesn’t overstep, the 2nd amendment isn’t needed. Every compromise is a loss of civil rights to Americans and greater restrictions on their ability to defend themselves.       Sorry D & G but no way. They can’t even correctly define nor identify an actual “assault weapon”. Why would give them cart blanche to outlaw or restrict something they define by emotion not fact? By their definition any semi automatic weapon can be an assault weapon. That’s just not good enough for me.

    We don’t need any more laws of regulations. All they do is to limit what law abiding people can do. If you give an inch to liberals, they will take a mile. Background checks will be abused as they will block seniors or anyone taking specific drugs for medical problems. Any emotional issue that the liberals get involved with will be added to the restrictions of the existing law.
