Cold Cash Jefferson Finally Indicted

All I have to say is, it is about (deleted) time

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, D-Louisiana, was indicted Monday on federal charges of racketeering, soliciting bribes and money-laundering in a long-running bribery investigation into business deals he tried to broker in Africa.

The indictment handed up Monday in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, is more than an inch thick and lists 16 alleged violations of federal law that could keep Jefferson in prison for up to 200 years.

Almost two years ago, in August 2005, investigators raided Jefferson’s home in Louisiana and found $90,000 in cash stuffed into a box in his freezer.

Way to go, Alberto. Took your sweet time applying justice. Though, I guess one does have to be careful when indicting one of the gilded elite.

I wonder what Dems think?

Alternate Brain is happy that Repugs are way ahead of the Dems.

Booman Tribune is more worried about who will be elected to replace Cold Cash.

At the Kos Kids, it only is worthy of a brief mention, and that he is "dragging Democrats down." Nothing about wanting to clean up their own house.

Keep an eye on this comment thread at the Hufftard Post. It is getting good!

Not much else out there in the Left-o-sphere. You know, because they are just so against dirty politicians. Snicker.

On the right, Captain Ed says that this will put Nance Pelosi in a tough spot.

More at Blogs for Bush, The Jawa Report, Powerline, sure there are others, but the Real Worldâ„¢ is calling.

Update: some more from Confederate Yankee, Hot Air, Michelle has freezer burn, Outside The Beltway, Sister Toldjah, and Stop The ACLU

One of this sites favorite liberals, the Gun Toting Liberal, takes on Cold Cash, and tears him up. We’ll make GTL a neocon yet! GTL is more concerned with the crime then anything else.

Nothing from the the official Democrat Party blog. That would interfere with their culture of corruption meme.

Over at the Democratic Underground, this is the only thread I can find, and, apparently the nutters aren’t in the building. I hate to throw denigration out there when the commenters make sense, but, really, how often does that happy? Anyhow, kudos to the DU’ers on the thread.

And more from CNN, kinda a bombshell

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Nearly two years after federal agents reported finding $90,000 in a freezer in his Washington home, U.S. Rep. William Jefferson has been charged with a global campaign to solicit bribes, obstruct justice and engage in racketeering, Justice Department officials said Monday.

International offenses. Will anyone want Cold Cash brought to the International Court?

Cold Cash says he is innocent, and will fight to clear his name in a cool, calculating way. Maybe he will invest in some carbon offsets to turn the heat down. Kinda hard to argue with $90,000 of a $100k bribe being found in ones freezer.

And even more: GOP Bloggers points out the difference in Nance Pelosi’s rhetoric when it was Tom Delay, and what she said about Cold Cash J (has more street cred, eh?)

It will be interesting to see if the Democrats handle this in a different wat than the Republicans did when Tom Delay was indicted. Just before his indictment the Republicans changed the rules so that he could continue to hold his seat while under state indictment.

  6. That sure won’t help his case, Darth.

John, one of the things about the Delay case was that he was charged under laws that did not exist at the time the alleged crime was committed. Now, if he was breaking the laws that existed at the time, I am all for prosecution.

Jefferson broke laws that existed at the time, and no matter what party, he should be busted. I was happy when Cunningham went to the pokey, as he broke the public trust (among other things.)

  7. “Dollar Bill” Goes DOWN……

It’s only taken two years, but Louisiana Congressman “Dollar Bill” Jefferson has FINALLY been indicted for his [psst – “alleged“] involvement in bribery and corruption. Since the day he was first [psst – “allegedl…

Sorry you are incorrect. You seem to have forgotten to mention this:

    GOP Abandons Ethics Changes
Dissent in Party Halts House Move

House Republican leaders last night abandoned a proposal to loosen rules governing members’ ethical conduct, as they yielded to pressure from rank-and-file lawmakers concerned that the party was sending the wrong message.

The proposal would have made it more difficult for lawmakers to discipline a colleague for unethical behavior and would have allowed Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) to keep his post if he is indicted by a Texas grand jury that is looking into his campaign finance practices.

Also realize the Dems DID NOT have the same rule as the Repubs do. WHich is when you are indicted you must resign from leadership.
Unlesss, John Ryan can show me the Dems rule concerning this kind of thing. Of course we know he can’t. So John do not pretend you are your ilk are holier than tho. Corruption crosses party lines, it happens is both. It is call human nature.

Unfortunately, we know the Dems will handle this as they usually do . They will let him stay and serve until he is convicted.
