In 1068 William the Conqueror ordered a survey of Britain to determine just how much wealth existed in the country. One of the things discovered was that the Scots had vineyards that produced a very acceptable wine. Grapes have grown in Scotland during various historical periods. In the Medieval Warm Period (~800s to 1300s AD), remnants of wine grape vineyards were unearthed in regions as far north as the 55th parallel1. The Victorians also cultivated grapes in Scotland, with William Thomson battling against the Scottish climate to grow high-quality grapes3. Ancient tax records show that Britons grew their own wine grapes in the 11th century during the Medieval Warming, but it got too cold during the Little Ice Age4. Additionally, Roman legislation from the end of the first century A.D. limited British, French, and Spanish vineyards to protect the Italian market
