Greenhushing is killing us: why companies must break their silence on climate change
Will 2026 be the year we look back at and say “that was the year the climate emergency really started”? We have certainly had many crises over the past few years as global temperatures have risen. But the protracted weather extremes experienced globally, in Europe, North America, and across Asia, make this year feel different.
What future historians will puzzle over ?is why contemporaneous records will show that public discussion of climate change as the root cause didn’t increase. At least in the UK, where I ?live, the silence got worse.
They’ll look back and say “these people were in a massive cult. There was nothing unusual in comparison to previous Holocene warm periods.”
First of all, there’s a popular misconception ?that people don’t like to hear about climate. Yes, people switch off when they hear jargon like “planetary boundaries” or “the clean energy transition”. But ?research from the Potential Energy Coalition shows climate matters to people when it connects to what they care about: the health of their children, the insurance on their home, the ?price of their food.
They care in theory, but, mostly change nothing in their lives to be a good climate comrade
The most sustained attack is that climate action costs too much and asks too much of ordinary families. In the UK, Reform wants to scrap net zero and axe the government department responsible for it, while the Conservatives’ leader, Kemi Badenoch, has called the 2050 target “impossible” and vowed to repeal the Climate Change Act.
So the people who elect these politicians want this so how dare they!
Silence comes at a cost. It breeds inaction, which will slow us down further and ?cause more pain and suffering. ?People who care deeply about the climate start to think they’re alone in caring, which saps the momentum for action. Silence is space someone else will fill – usually with climate denial, distraction and disinformation. We can’t afford to cede that ground.
Businesses staying silent also matters. It’s dubbed “greenhushing”: companies keeping quiet on their climate goals, wary of political backlash or public scrutiny if they fall short ?of their ?targets. (snip)
We know that people want climate action, they see what’s happening. And collective ?action problems need collective solutions. What we need is loud voices returning to companies and to the media. And we need some more bravery to stand up for our shared futures.
These people think they have the Authority to tell businesses how to operate. Really, these days, more and more businesses are opting out or have opted out of placating the climate cult.

That said, over the past several years the CC Deniers finally admitted the Earth was warming.
The Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature (skeptic Richard Muller) study released its initial findings in October 2011, concluding that the land surface warming record is accurate and uncompromised by:
1. Urban heat islands
2. Station quality (Poor or compromised thermometer placement does not invalidate the overall warming trends).
3. Data selection or adjustments (Flaws or human biases in data selection and data adjustments do not invalidate the measured increase in land temperatures).
Science Deniers did not accept this data until Anthony Watts (WUWT) did. Even today, Mr Teach blames urban heat islands for much of the warming. Deniers continue to argue (without evidence) that climate scientists have rigged or fudged the data.

Hey, all you climate a$$holes, you have no idea how much plastic I deal with everyday when I shop or get something to eat or by anything off the shelf. You scream at me but the stores are full of the things that pollute.

Personally, I don’t care how much they walk the walk. Their own foolishness does not inspire foolishness in me. If anything thair lack of walking proves to me they aren’t serious about climate or carbon, and since I already know they lie to me about everything, I already wasn’t going to listen to their talk anyway.
“Greenhushing” = businesses focusing their efforts on their business instead of political activism. Spending business resources on business investment or distributing profits to the owners instead of using it to pay political activists and their friends who produce nothing but hot air.
