Japan Faces $6-a-Person Lawsuit Over Climate Change Risks
More than 450 people are suing Japan’s government and seeking damages of 1,000 yen ($6) each, alleging one of the world’s top greenhouse gas emitters isn’t doing enough to combat global warming.
The lawsuit, filed Thursday at the Tokyo District Court, argues the nation’s climate targets aren’t ambitious enough to meet global commitments to limit the Earth’s temperature rise to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
Japan’s pledges to cut emissions by 60% by 2035 from 2013 levels fall short of what’s required and “threaten our lives,” according to a summary of the complaint from the Climate Justice Litigation Office, a group that helped organize the case.
So, if the government gives them the $6 each will they go away and forgo all future suits, and just leave the rest of us alone? Seriously, there are way worse things to worry about in Japan, like earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes….oh, right, the cult says ‘climate change’ causes those now.
this is the camel’s nose. Once they get this judgement it legitimizes all that come later and which will have HUGE amounts.
I wonder “how much is enough” and if the 1000 yen recovery is sufficient to cover the entirety of damages to each person. I understand the camels nose argument, but just imagine the future courts holding that damages were already paid and settled forever.
