Democrats push for lawmakers to get armed security
As members of Congress grapple with growing personal threats, top Democrats in the US House are lobbying Republicans to let each lawmaker’s office employ an armed staff member to accompany them in their districts, as well as a law enforcement coordinator.
Rep. Joe Morelle of New York, the top Democrat on the committee in charge of member security, told Semafor that he and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have discussed pushing House Speaker Mike Johnson and committee chair Bryan Steil, R-Wis., for the additional hiring capacity.
Their push, which includes other priorities, comes as lawmakers gain access to a new $20,000 monthly personal security allowance starting Monday.
The law enforcement coordinator could “try to mitigate [threats] in advance and really do the prep work necessary,” Morelle said, while the armed staff member would be “someone who’s probably a former law enforcement, former military, who meets all the requirements of being able to carry a gun.”
Morelle placed “much of the blame” for the increase in threats to members — which he said have jumped tenfold since 2016 — on President Donald Trump, who most recently instructed the FBI to investigate six congressional Democrats who filmed a social media video telling military members not to follow illegal orders.
Perhaps they shouldn’t have broadcast a video telling service members to refuse orders they “feel” are illegal while blowing off the chain of command, all because they decided to die on the hill of caterwauling about strikes against foreign drug running boats.
Maybe Democrats should exercise their own 2nd Amendment right and carry a firearm.

I wonder if they’ll let the National Guard troops carry in D.C.? It appeared some were unarmed when the shooting started last week. And the one soldier had to duck around the corner to chamber a round before shooting the bad guy. Were only the MPs armed? Another question our press never asked.
Great question. In the past 100 years or so, US politicians and generals have been terrified of US troops in American soil with live ammunition. A few incidents like Kent state shooting and the USMC gunner who shot a kid at the Mexican border reinforce that illogic.
Troops deployed to Hurricane Sandy and Katrina had no ammunition but carried weapons anyway to “give the appearance of force”.
After 9-11 when the National Guard were sent to patrol airports, they again went without ammunition, but put empty magazines in their weapons to conceal that fact.
MPs generally have ammunition for their pistols, which are their duty weapons but do not have ammunition otherwise.
Rabbit-like military commanders, fearful of someone getting shot and making them look bad, even if they do issue ammunition, will have restrictions on when the weapons can be loaded. Those same rabbit-like military officers often carry such restrictions into combat areas too.
Finally, most military units do not even have enough ammunition to issue to all of their troops. This is particularly true of National guards. Active units normally have a bunker nearby from which they can issue small arms ammunition to units, but normally the amounts held in reserve are only what the units need throughout the year for training. The bureaucrats in the military have strict policy control about using training ammunition for operations.
We can expect guard units deployed to city streets in America to be armed with pistols and ammunition, with no round in the chamber. Ammunition for rifles will be held back in a nearby vehicle and not even a full basic load. No ammunition for machine guns, grenades, or anything bigger. Most guardsmen will rely on safety in numbers to defend themselves from being robbed.
