        Dr Dana is correct. That’s the definition of a vaccine – whether using an “attenuated” (chemically-treated or genetically derived) target virus or bacterium, an immunogenic protein or even the mRNA of an immunogenic protein.

        The myth* is that, in the late 1700s, physician-scientist Edward Jenner noticed that milkmaids did not contract smallpox, but did suffer from the mild “cowpox”. By transferring material from cowpox pustules to others, he was able to prevent smallpox infections. Some proteins produced from smallpox and cowpox (DNA–>RNA–>protein) are similar enough to generate cross-reactive antibodies that block infection by the intact smallpox virus. The term “vaccine” derives from the Latin “vacca” for “cow”.

        Dr Dana continues… “a virus that kills its host will ultimately be unsuccessful”. In general “yes”. But note that even deadly human viruses have 8 BILLION potential hosts.
