Surprise: Natural Immunity To COVID Is Rather Real

Remember early on when people who had had COVID were thought to have created big resistance, even immunity, to the Chinese coronavirus, and, when coupled with those getting the just released vaccines, this would be a good thing? But, then, Brandon won the election, and Democrats, their pet media, and the Popular Medical Experts said everyone needed to get the vaccine, because natural immunity was bunk? That it was meaningless? That it didn’t really exist? That it didn’t matter? Take the damned vaccine, peons, and we might maybe possibly let you have your lives back. Or not.

Tweets and Facebooks posts were censored, as were videos on Youtube and other social media sites, or, at least, given a “disinformation” label. And now?

The future of the pandemic is looking clearer as we learn more about infection

surprise surprise surpriseDuring the early days of the pandemic, scientists and doctors were concerned that being infected with SARS-CoV-2 might not trigger a strong immune response in many people – thus an infection might not provide long-term protection.

“Immunity to Covid-19 could be lost in months, UK study suggests,” a headline from The Guardian alerted back in July 2020. “King’s College London team found steep drops in patients’ antibody levels three months after infection,” the story warned.

But that idea was based on preliminary data from the laboratory — and on a faulty understanding of how the immune system works. Now about a year and a half later, better data is painting a more optimistic picture about immunity after a bout of COVID-19. In fact, a symptomatic infection triggers a remarkable immune response in the general population, likely offering protection against severe disease and death for a few years.

And if you’re vaccinated on top of it, your protection is likely even better, studies are consistently showing.

Here are several key questions people have been asking throughout the pandemic – and ones that researchers are beginning to answer.

So, natural immunity is rather real? Huh. Where are all the apologies from the Powers That Be?

With SARS-CoV-2, your immune system generates two types of protection: protection against reinfection and protection against severe illness upon that second infection. Let’s start with the latter.

If you’re under age 50 and healthy, then a bout of COVID-19 offers good protection against severe disease if you were to be infected again in a future surge, says epidemiologist Laith Abu-Raddad, at Weill-Cornell Medical-Qatar. “That’s really important because eventually, every one of us will get infected,” he says. “But if reinfections prove to be more mild, in general, it will allow us to live with this pandemic in a much easier way.” (snip)

These findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in December, are consistent with data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last month. In that study, a prior infection reduced the risk of hospitalization during the delta surge by more than 50 times compared with in people who hadn’t had a prior infection and were not vaccinated. People who had had both a prior infection and were vaccinated had the most protection.

I wonder if the Usual Suspects will block the content from NPR, the study, and the CDC?

  1. I've had covid says:

I can attest to this. I had the Delta back around Feb. of 2021. I walked around without a mask or vaccine for this entire time because I contacted covid before a shot was even available to me.

I said to myself. SELF. If I do not have immunity from covid after having had covid then these vaccines are a lie. So I just never took the shot when it was finally offered to me. Yes, I am one of those evil people Biden wants to lock up and throw away the key.

To be fair I contracted the Omicron in December. Was sick for five days with a sore throat, runny nose, and a bit of mailaise. After about five days the sore throat went away and within a week I felt perfectly fine. It was A cold. I actually self-isolated cause I knew it was omicron cause I rode in a car with three other people during XMAS and we all got sick with the same thing. Two of them were tested positive for Covid, though they did not say what type everyone knows it was omicron based upon the symptoms.

Now having said that. Two of the people were vaxxed and boosted and caught it. I was natural immunity and caught it. The fourth person got one shot and felt so bad afterward she said FF that and never got her second dose. She was the sickest of us all but she was nowhere near desperate or in danger of going to the ICU.

So yeah, The fact I ran around for months after having Delta with no mask other than where mandated at the time. It was in a red state that did have masks mandates despite what people think. IE. Federal offices, courthouses, hospitals, clinics, Walmart at the time, and many other stores and restaurants, etc.

I never caught the virus again and when I did, It was a weak cold for me.

So yeah, everyone knows natural immunity is probably MORE powerful than these shots. Even the scientist know that but I am sure all their grants were doubled and tripled by Pfizer, J&J, MODERNA and others to peddle their multi-billion dollar vaccines.

    • Professor hale says:

I never caught the virus again and when I did, It was a weak cold for me.

This statement is self-evidently not true. If it was a weak cold, then you DID get it again. Perhaps you meant to say something else.

It has been my observation that there is no immunity for anyone. Vaxed or unvaxed, it’s all the same.

What we know with the evidence of our own eyes:
      1. Vaxes don’t work. They seem to convey a testable level of immune response for about 4 months then dwindle to zero rather quickly. Vaxed and unvaxed communities seem to have the exact same experience with severity, frequency and duration of viral infections.
      2. Masks don’t work. Medical grade, paper, cloth, or no mask at all. The testable and observable difference after two years is: No difference at all.
      3. The vaxes have severe side effects on small but important number of young healthy people who never had any risk from the Virus.
      4. Vaxing and masking should have been a strictly medical issue but The Democratic party has made it a compliance and loyalty issue because they ran a campaign against Trump’s “Ineffective response to the COVID”. If the science were really being followed, masking would have been dropped after the first 90 days and boosters would never have been offered.

I speculate that a 4th shot (booster) will not be offered because it will be seen as an open admission of the failure of the Vax to convey any immunity at all. Politicians can never admit failure.

      • Down on the Corner says:

I never caught the virus again and when I did, It was a weak cold for me.

I’m not the most literate person, having never finished High School. I did learn to type in the army with my GED and which is why I never spent time in the ME.

        That said.

what I shoulda said was I never caught the delta virus again after having it. I ran around from February of 2021 till december 2021 before contracting Omicron(which felt just like a weak cold for me) without masks unless mandated by certain institutions. I am not a rebel by nature. I try to get along.

AS for the science of Covid. The left is using it just like they use the AGW BS. If you don’t believe what they tell you, you get canceled and your carrer ended. That is why this site is popular even hairy and Dowd hide their names cause they don’t want to get outted, or canceled.

  2. Mrs Pico and I were discussing the possibility that we might have had asymptomatic COVID, because the Xi Omicron variant almost completely bypasses vaccination and normal masks. She’s an RN, working in a hospital, and yes, she takes care of COVID patients. Sure, she wears her suit of armor when with the COVID patients, but nothing is perfect.

As I’ve mentioned previously, the majority of Kentuckians do not wear masks, and it seems likely that we’ve walked down an aisle at Kroger or someplace with someone carrying the virus. Dr Fauxi has said that, eventually, almost everybody will be exposed to the virus, so it would seem unlikely that we’ve never been exposed, even though it’s possible it never took with us.

If everyone is going to be exposed to COVID-19 anyway, why are we bothering with restrictions?

    • Professor hale says:

      To flatten the curve?

    • Zachriel says:

The vaccinated Dana: If everyone is going to be exposed to COVID-19 anyway, why are we bothering with restrictions?

The purpose was to allow time for the development and distribution of a vaccine, and to flatten the curve during surges. Most restrictions will be eased over the next few weeks as the pandemic wanes (absent a new variant).

NOTE, the Z people have shown up with their excessively stupid comments. They are high school kids who don’t know shit and comments come from web sites that are mostly propaganda. Answering them is the same as doing their home work for their debate club.

        • Zachriel says:

          david7134: NOTE

There doesn’t appear to be anything germane to the topic in your latest comment. You might want to check your filters. They may be clogged.

    • david7134 says:

      Dana,
The mask are a joke and only make it look like Biden is doing something. Now that the Z is here he or she or neither will have some useless study to prove the value, there is none.

      • Zachriel says:

david7134: The mask are a joke and only make it look like Biden is doing something.

Which is why doctors and nurses never wear masks.

        • Est1950 says:

I have said this repeatedly and it is worth repeating. The masks in question are the cloth masks that everyone can afford because you don’t have to use 2-10 per day. Mom can make a cloth one or buy one for fifty cents and you wear it for months and months.

In hospitals, those masks you are referring to are at a minimum, surgical masks, which do help by about 30 percent or more likely they are using the N-95 masks which stop something like 99 percent of the nasty stuff.

Sure if the entire world could AFFORD N-95’s which might cost a family of 4 about 200 dollars per month to buy and use if they ever wanted to work, go to school, or a restaurant then I would agree with your assessment of masks working.

You, as with all elites do not understand poverty. You are demanding of people around the world and even in your own country to spend money they simply do not have. I can speak from experience that in my country of Ecuador these KN or N masks do not exist other than for the elites in their gated communities, leaving the rest of the country to tie cheap, porous bandana’s around their face in a vain attempt at placating the authority and to grasp at a straw that it might actually prevent them from acquiring the virus.

When you start providing Masks for the world, then perhaps voluntary masking would be acceptable to most of those people who live in places other than your USA gated communities or malls or tall skyscrapers where your suit costs more than the yearly salary of most people living around the world.

          • Zachriel says:

Est1950: Sure if the entire world could AFFORD N-95’s which might cost a family of 4 about 200 dollars per month to buy

You can buy N95 masks for about a dollar, and they can be reused as long as they keep their original shape and are not soiled.

However, cloth masks still reduce the transmission of respiratory disease, including COVID, in most common situations. See Cheng et al., Face masks effectively limit the probability of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, Science 2021.

          • david7134 says:

            Z,
So you can take a mask, worn all day and full of virus particles and handle it, take it through your home and car and think you are not being exposed. Not very bright.

        • david7134 says:

          Z,
You are mistaken, doctors such as me do wear mask, under certain select circumstances. But as a child you would not be aware of how the world works.

          • Zachriel says:

david7134: So you can take a mask, worn all day and full of virus particles and handle it, take it through your home and car and think you are not being exposed.

In typical that situations that people find themselves in, a mask will reduce the probability of acquiring enough of a viral load to cause an infection. See Cheng et al.

          • david7134 says:

            Z,
No, Cheng is wrong, how about providing the link. Note that just because you have a study you like it is meaningless, especially if challenged by an expert.

          • Zachriel says:

david7134: No, Cheng is wrong, how about providing the link.

We provided a citation above. Cheng et al. could be wrong, but you are simply declaring that they are wrong, which is not an argument.

So summarize: Respiratory disease can be transmitted by droplets or aerosols. Droplets drop out of the air in a few feet, and masks and social distancing are very effective at stopping droplets. Aerosols can stay in the air for some time, and they tend to accumulate, especially in crowded areas with poor ventilation. If the concentration of aerosols is very high, such as in a crowded bar, then a mask will probably not be able to stop the transfer of contagion. If you are outside and there is a breeze, then a mask will have little effect as the probability of infection is already very low. But in many situations, such a grocery stores or other spaces with sufficient ventilation and social distancing, masks can reduce the viral load below the minimum required to be infected.

Similarly with a reused masked. If you are exposed to heavy concentrations of virus, especially droplets, then reusing a mask may result in infection. However, for ordinary use while maintaining social distance, reusing a mask doesn’t represent a significant issue.

William “Strawman” Teach strikes again. Can he point to the medical experts who claimed that there was no natural immunity to SARS-CoV-2? We’ll wait… Even the worst president in history thought it imperative to develop vaccines.

Anyone? Does Teach have a point other than to denigrate vaccines and libs?

Polio generates natural immunity but we still found it necessary to develop vaccines. Diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, chickenpox etc all stimulate a natural immune response, yet we developed vaccines.

Let everyone get sick and skip the vaccines!! Other than some 1 million dead Americans, it’s a great plan!! How many would have died without the vaccines? 2 million, 3 million? According to research, the vaccines likely prevented 1.1 million deaths and over 10 hospitalizations. Another million dead Americans may not feel like much to a right-winger but the families would disagree.

Today, almost all the dead and dying are unvaccinated. Great plan anti-vaxxers, great plan.

We get it. NuRightists feel belittled by Tesla-driving, oat-milk drinking, vegan, college-educated, globalist-leaning, science-trusting, commie-supporting, transgender-accepting libtard elites, and oppose everything the libs support. When your dumbass ideas come back to haunt you, you respond with more lies.

Vaccines aren’t vaccines! Only 6% are dying! Ivermectin for all! It’s the flu! Athletes are dropping dead from the “jabs”! It’s gene therapy! The vaccines kill more than they save! Bill Gates has trackers in the vaccines! Mandated vaccinations are tyranny! Masks don’t work*, and are tyranny!

*The med community has noticed that asthma attacks have plummeted during the pandemic, likely from the drop in exposure to triggering viruses (cold and flu viruses) resulting from masking, distancing and hand-washing. I’ve never had the flu, but like most Americans get 3-4 bad colds a year… but none in the past couple of years.

I can’t quite wrap my head around the condescension in this small paragraph nor its real purpose. I wonder if you know how many Latinos, Asians, gays, and poor white and black boys and girls have been sent to their deaths around the globe for the expansionist empire that is the United States of America LED by the people you just described?

I wonder if you know who is sending those boys and girls to their deaths? JFK, LBJ. Hoover in Korea. Bush dynasty in Afghanistan and Iraq and Kuwait. Clinton in Bosnia, as well as Somalia. Let us not forget those people you listed above are all part of the apparatus of the establishment that thrives on death and destruction around the globe for profit.

Literally the dust has not settled in Afghanistan and today the drums of war are yet again sounding in Ukraine. The MSM is pounding the drums of war and you speak with such a condescending attitude that those you listed are somehow righteous and above it all when the boys and girls being sent to do their bidding are the same people that you disparage for their sacrifices.

I know you will say but I said nothing about war or fighting which is exactly WHY I cannot wrap my head around the paragraph in question. Think about it. Sometimes thinking outside the box gets you more answered questions than playing in the sandbox.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

      EST,

My point was the American nuRight (nuGOP) is motivated by their insecurities and resentments of what they view as condescension by “liberal elites”. Because of this mindset, the right opposes everything lib/Dems support, even proposals that benefit the right like Covid vaccination. In fact, a cottage industry has developed on the right opposing vaccinations and promoting Covid!!

You may want to re-evaluate your claim that liberal elites are responsible for American-led military excursions.

      • Est1950 says:

Elwood. I understood what you thought you were saying, but sometimes what we think we are saying is not actually the truth at all.

For example, the least vaccinated race of people in the United States are Blacks and we know that blacks vote democratic by about 92 percent. Hispanics is the next least vaccinated group and they vote democratic by about 70 percent giving or taking a few points on averages. Those two groups combine for 25 percent of the United States Populace.

What you are not hearing is from Blacks and Hispanics about their anti-vax, anti-mask opposition but rather you point to Whites and believe somehow that all of those whites are NUCONS as you constantly call them.

The elites do not care for the working man which is the group you were describing. You constantly profess to care for the working man and if that is so then you would certainly not be using the paragraph in question to describe yourself and the left.

Elites care only about their gated communities, their 1000 dollar suits, and their 125,000 dollars electric car. They care about their golfing and vacations and the cocktail parties where they rub elbows with each other and laugh at you and me. That is unless you are one of the elites. I know because I rubbed elbows a few times in my former life in the USA. I know what they talk about and what they think and by They, I mean both parties, both sides of the aisle.

They think about how to make more money, gain more power, influence more people. It is an addictive drug, fueled by self-importance. A Jr. College professor with a Ph.D. in Chemistry is somehow frowned on unless he teaches at NYU or YALE or HARVARD. Even teaching at a four-year university is frowned on if it is the University of Montana vs the University of Oxford.

TLDR: The elites you point to are a subclass of political species that all hang out together with one goal in mind. Self-enrichment and if you think they have the little guy, the working man or black and Hispanics as their top priority well then I suggest you spend some time rubbing elbows with these people and you will find yourself quite shocked at what you discover.

As for your point about rethinking American-led military excursions. I pointed out Vietnam was JFK and LBJ. Korea was Truman. World War two was FDR. Bosnia and Somalia were Clinton. The middle east wars of course were mostly the Bush Dynasty that Obama could not help but join in the fun because these ELITES deemed it of him.

BUT they were all led and cheered on by the very elites you believe have the best interests of the little guy in mind. Both GOP and Democrat. Elites have only their own best interests in mind when they do anything. Finger to the wind Brother. Finger to the wind.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

          EST,

You make my point. Your comments drip with resentment.

US liberals actually propose policies that support the poor and working classes, e.g., progressive taxation, labor unions, universal healthcare insurance, infrastructure, minimum wages, redistribution of wealth, worker protections, environmental regulations, Social Security etc, etc and so forth. Conservatives oppose the poor and working classes at every turn.

Please understand that the US is a plutocracy – rule by the wealthy. Every law and policy ends up supporting the wealthy at the expense of the poor and working classes. And this is not a lib vs con development, it’s the wealthy vs non-wealthy.

The nuCon, nuGOP, nuRight, trumpista elites have convinced white, conservative Christian, working class men that Blacks, Hispanics, gays, atheists, Muslims etc are trying to steal America. This is why the nuGOP is, state by state, suppressing the votes of Dem voting blocs.

        • Zachriel says:

Est1950: the least vaccinated race of people in the United States are Blacks . . . Hispanics is the next least vaccinated group

“Racial disparities in vaccination rates have narrowed over time and have closed for Hispanic people.” Keep in mind that many Blacks and Hispanics live in underserved communities.
