Now, California is a place of massive tectonic activity. Many massive faults, lots of smaller ones. The Pacific plate is diving under California. This is what creates those hills and mountains. And, you get erosion of those hills and mountains. A place of alternative dry and wet, and, in this case, right near the ocean. You know this. It’s called science. Geology. Etc.
