I just returned from Canada where I was forced to used paper straws by government edict. I cannot fully describe how truly unpleasant it is to have to drink through a paper straw. Beware, they are coming for your plastic spoons next.

Right. When I want to know what “real men” do, I always ask some leftist troll on the internet.

I either drink water or coffee when at a restaurant, and if I order water, it is always served with a straw. I choose not to use the straws — who uses a straw to drink ice water from a glass at home? — so it seems to me that the simplest thing to do is to instruct the waiter to ask if the customer wants a straw.

Actually Dana many people who use straws do so because they don’t like the cold ice hitting their teeth. For some with sensitive teeth it’s even painful. I drink Fiji bottled water kept at 38 degrees (old restaurant habit to prolong freshness). In the food business I just never served water unless a guest asked for it and given a selection of bottled waters I actually made good money on and provided a wrapped straw which was reusable and a very posh lemon and lime slice on a doilied plate. I felt too many glasses clutter the table PLUS, if they aren’t “given” water there is a 78% chance they will buy a beverage be it soda, bottled water or cocktails. It worked.
