The new Acting Secretary of Defense, Patrick M. Shanahan, has no military experience but is a former executive of Boeing (1986-2017). Boeing is one of the top 3 global military contractors.
He was Deputy Defense Secretary since leaving Boeing in 2017, and led the Space Force initiative.
To Shanahan’s credit he instituted an alert system in the Pentagon so that he would not make decisions related to Boeing.
SecDef is a managerial position and doesn’t require military experience. That’s what the Joint Chiefs are for.
