NY Times Is Suddenly Very Concerned About Executive Pardons

At least when it comes to one person, the NYT Editorial Board is upset

Say No to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Mr. Trump
By pardoning an official who showed contempt for a judge, the president would show contempt for American courts.

It would be difficult for President Trump, who has insulted judges and tried to interfere with a federal investigation, to show much more disrespect for the rule of law. But if he makes good on his implicit vow to pardon Joe Arpaio, the disgraced former sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz., Mr. Trump would be scorning the Constitution itself.

Mr. Arpaio, an anti-immigrant hard-liner who served 24 years in office before voters tossed him out last November, was convicted in July of criminal contempt of court for disregarding a federal judge’s orders to stop detaining people based solely on the suspicion that they were in the country illegally.

So, Sheriff Joe was attempting to uphold the laws of the U.S. that state that people who are here illegally should not be here. And ignored a SJW judge who was attempting to protect the trespassing aliens. Now, let’s be honest, Joe should not have disregarded the judges order in such a manner, he should have continued the legal fight. But, this was a minor thing, which could see him jailed for no more than 6 months.

But, what of another person?

President Obama’s Last Chance to Show Mercy

President Obama did the right thing in granting clemency to Chelsea Manning, who was sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking huge amounts of classified information about American diplomatic and military activities in 2010. Ms. Manning, who has served nearly seven years, is to be released on May 17.

Of course, it was Mr. Obama’s overly aggressive Justice Department that sought, and in 2013 won, that absurdly long sentence in the first place. The average sentence for those convicted of leaking classified material is one to three years.

Why, yes, that was also the NYTEB. Manning earned that long sentence for the amount of classified information leaked and how damaging it was. He was convicted on 19 felony charges, 12 of those being under the Espionage Act and for theft.

But, Manning was a darling of the uber-left, especially as he came out as gender confused.

Regardless, there is a vast difference between what Sheriff Joe did and what Bradley did. And you can see the leftwing bias in the NYTEB in how they treat the two issues.

So Joe was in violation of two federal judges’ orders, an appeals court decision and continued to round up brown people for being brown. What if a sheriff rounded up every white person they saw on suspicion of tax fraud? Joe was violating the civil rights of American citizens. Chelsea Manning leaked some classified and unclassified information that although embarrassing to the US, probably did more good than harm. Ms. Manning served 7 years, Joe has served no time.

The criminal charge grew out of a lawsuit filed a decade ago charging that the sheriff’s office regularly violated the rights of Latinos, stopping people based on racial profiling, detaining them based solely on the suspicion that they were in the country illegally, and turning them over to the immigration authorities.

Hearing the suit, another federal district judge, G. Murray Snow, ordered the sheriff in 2011 to halt detention based solely on suspicion of a person’s immigration status, when there was no evidence that a state law had been broken. An appeals court upheld that ruling, and Judge Snow later reinforced it with other orders.

But Mr. Arpaio insisted, publicly and repeatedly, that his office’s practices were legal and would not change, and advocates said the detentions continued. On Monday, Judge Bolton ruled that Mr. Arpaio had willfully violated the 2011 court order. “Not only did Defendant abdicate responsibility, he announced to the world and to his subordinates that he was going to continue business as usual no matter who said otherwise,” she wrote.

tRump is within his rights to pardon Joe, just as he will likely have to pardon tRump Jr for treason.

Joe Arpaio is a pathetic old racist who will die soon. Anyway, he was likely to get a suspended sentence for his crimes, so leave him alone.

Let him die as he lived, despised and alone.

tRump will die the same way.
