Wartime Treatment Of Germans Questioned

But you will not guess from when

WASHINGTON – In 1943, 17-year-old Eberhard Fuhr was taken out of his high school classroom in Cincinnati, arrested by FBI agents, and sent off to an internment camp for "enemy aliens" in Texas, where he spent the next 4 1/2 years with his family. Thousands of Germans experienced a similar fate. They were detained in far fewer numbers in this country than Japanese.

The stories of the Germans have gotten little attention so far, but the Senate took a step toward changing that this week, voting to look into the treatment of Germans and other Europeans in the U.S. during World War II.

The legislation’s status is uncertain because it was passed as an amendment to the immigration bill, which stalled in the Senate this week.

Still, just getting a vote on the issue was an accomplishment for Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., who represents a large German population. For the last six years, a hold placed by an anonymous Republican senator had kept it from coming up for a vote.

I wonder if the Big Media will chalk this up as another "accomplishment" of the worthless Democrat Congress?

Hey, I sorta feel bad for all those interned who were good Americans, but we were in a World War II, in which a meglamaniac monster had whipped up an incredible following in Germany, and was going for, at the least, European domination. As the article points out, 11,000 Germans and 3,000 Italians, roughly, were interned. Was it right? Wrong? Who knows? But, the administration did the best they could to safeguard the United States. It’s easy to Monday Morning QB something that happened over 60 years ago.

Feingold’s "Wartime Treatment Study Act" would set up a commission to examine the treatment of German, Italian and other Europeans; and a second commission to look into how Jewish refugees fleeing persecution were treated.

Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., opposed the bill, saying it was based on findings "that slander America incorrectly." Those findings say, in part, that U.S. wartime policies were "devastating" to Germans and Italians living in the United States.

I get the feeling Feingold is either trying to get attention, or is getting influenced by someone or some group. Why else embark in this flight of the dodo? It’s old news. Why rehash it? What purpose will it serve? Maybe he is trying to slur the USA. Liberals are always good for turning our country into a bad guy.

“Americans are rightly proud of our victory in World War II, but while there has been study of the internment and relocation of Japanese Americans during World War II, few people know about our government’s failure to protect the basic rights of German and Italian Americans. We also must understand why, as the United States heroically battled fascism, our government turned away thousands of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany, delivering many of them to their deaths at the hands of the Nazi regime. By passing my legislation, we can learn from these tragedies while some of the people who survived these injustices are still with us.”

Nicely worded, but it really will not provide any sort of positive closure, just a way of demeaning America. How about we look into why habeaus corpus was suspended during the Civil War, Russ?

Considering that the majority, if not all, of the people involved in in the Roosevelt admins decision to intern the Germans and Italians are deceased, we sure won’t get their side of it, other then in writings. How about those who were involved in surveilence which led to the internments? Will they be involved? How about the guard?
