While we are on pinups, since it is that time of year, have you gotten your “Pinups for Vets” calendar yet? And don’t forget to check out what I declare to be our War on Women Rule 5 and linky luv posts and things that interest me

Don’t forget to check out all the other great material all the linked blogs have!

Anyone else have a link or hotty-fest going on? Let me know so I can add you to the list. (BTW, since someone asked, the reason I leave links for the previous week up (or you might see a *) is because they are place holders for later in the day or for next weeks. Easier than rewriting all the time. Also, the listing order has to do with how they are added over time, not how good a post is. I just copy and paste from the previous week, then edit. If you see one of the *’s, go ahead and check out the blog anyhow, see if there is an update. I cannot update with my Android during the day.

John Hinderaker?? LOL. THE John Hinderaker?? LOL. One had to figure conservatists racists would crawl out from under the woodwork to criticize a dead Muhammad Ali, lacking the courage to do so earlier. Check the right wing twitterings about Ali. Pathetic.

Simply put, Ali took a courageous stand against the Vietnam war, sacrificing millions of dollars and over 3 years of in-his-prime boxing.

“Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on Brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights? No I’m not going 10,000 miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over. This is the day when such evils must come to an end. I have been warned that to take such a stand would cost me millions of dollars. But I have said it once and I will say it again. The real enemy of my people is here. I will not disgrace my religion, my people or myself by becoming a tool to enslave those who are fighting for their own justice, freedom and equality. If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to 22 million of my people they wouldn’t have to draft me, I’d join tomorrow. I have nothing to lose by standing up for my beliefs. So I’ll go to jail, so what? We’ve been in jail for 400 years.”

My conscience won’t let me go shoot my brother, or some darker people, or some poor hungry people in the mud for big powerful America. And shoot them for what? They never called me nigger, they never lynched me, they didn’t put no dogs on me, they didn’t rob me of my nationality, rape and kill my mother and father. … Shoot them for what? How can I shoot them poor people? Just take me to jail.

A loud-mouthed, humorous, intelligent Black man who converted to Islam, changed his name; one of the best boxers in history AND opposed the ill-fated Vietnam war before it was acceptable, was catnip to American racists. Whites were terrified.

    And Jeff:

Or better yet, read the post, then shamefacedly retraCT your own. It’s summertime, why don’t you take a vacation from posting for a year or two?

from Chuck Wepner on TV yesterday touchingly reminiscing about Ali:

In 1975 Wepner fought Ali in a championship fight. Wepner knocked Ali down in the 9th, went to his corner and said to his manager, “Start the car. We’re going to the bank. We’re gonna be millionaires.” To which his manager said, “You better turn around, Chuck. He’s getting up and he looks really pissed.”

Ali came back to win on a TKO in the 15th.

Before the fight, a confident Wepner bought his Mrs. a blue negligee, instructing her to “wear it tonight, you’ll be sleeping with a champion!”.

After the grueling fight, once he got back to his room, his wife was sitting on the edge of the bed in the blue negligee. Wepner was touched until his wife asked, “So is the champ coming here or do I go to his room?”.

Ali and Wepner became friends and stayed in touch.
