And cause sea levels to rise
Climate scientists claim Gulf Stream could be near collapse — predicting a new ice age
A key Atlantic current could be pushed to the brink of collapse within decades, supposedly ushering in a new ice age and dramatically raising sea levels, climate scientists have claimed in a controversial new study published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment.
The apocalyptic predictions came as a result of a collaboration between researchers at the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of California, San Diego — weeks after one-time climate alarmist Bill Gates publicly downplayed the impact of temperature fluctuations on the planet.
Per the new findings, the at-risk current in question is the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC, a “conveyor belt of the ocean” that funnels warm water toward the ocean surface from the tropics to the Northern Hemisphere.
This current, which includes the Gulf Stream that runs from the Gulf of Mexico to the US East Coast and across the Atlantic to Europe, helps maintain the mild climate of Europe, the UK and the US East Coast. (snip)
The researchers reportedly happened upon this warm spot by using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology General Circulation Model — a computer model that simulates the ocean, atmosphere and climate — to monitor how “AMOC-related signals” like energy waves ripple rapidly toward the equator.
So, no actual direct observations and measurements? Huh. Anyhow, do you know what happens when an ice age hits? Water is locked in glaciers. Sea levels drop, not rise. During the last ice age the Mediterranean was divorced from the Atlantic, as the Atlantic’s level was below the Meds, causing the Med to dry up considerably, which is why there are so many fantastic salt mines under the Med, and they have found, for instance, elephant bones at the bottom of the sea.
But, wait, didn’t computer models say we aren’t doomed this century or anytime soon from AMOC collapse? And weren’t we told that the AMOC was speeding up, not slowing down? Increasing? Seriously, this is all part of the natural cycle on Earth. They think it slowed down a bit prior to the Little Ice Age after the Medieval Warm Period. This stuff happens. Chill, people. Of course, the entire point here is to 1) get more government funding, 2) scare people into demanding government run their lives.

This would be like the end of the world predictions they have made EVERY TEN YEARS since 1890???
Sigh… The report in Nature did not predict a coming ice age, although the NY Post did!!!

Abstract
Climate models project an Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation slowdown under anthropogenic greenhouse warming. Despite a?~1.5?°C increase in the global mean surface temperature, debate remains on whether and when this circulation has slowed. Here we identify a distinctive temperature fingerprint in the equatorial Atlantic that signals the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation change through numerical ocean model experiments. The equatorial Atlantic is a crucial crossroads for the circulation anomalies to propagate to other oceans. A slowdown drives a mid-depth (1000–2000 m) warming in the equatorial Atlantic in a decade via baroclinic Kelvin waves. Analysis of climate models shows that this mid-depth temperature change is a better indicator for Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation change on decadal and longer timescales than other surface proxies. Observations reveal a robust mid-depth warming since 1960 that emerged from natural variability in the early 2000s, suggesting a slowdown that already started in the late 20th century.
As you all understand, Western Europe’s temperate climate depends on the AMOC’s warm waters. Otherwise it would be more like Canada! This has been discussed by scientists for at least a decade. Anyway, consider two points. 1) A breakdown in the conveyer transporting warm water north means less is removed from the south!!! Unlikely to trigger an ice age. 2) The NY Post is a right-wing rag.
