As the Fight for a Key Climate Goal Falters, Some Begin a Fight for Survival
The most ambitious part of the 2015 Paris climate agreement, to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, only came about because of a campaign by some of the world’s poorest and most defenseless countries.
Caribbean participants tacked up posters saying “1.5 to stay alive,” and the prime minister of Tuvalu said any temperature rise beyond that mark would “spell the total demise” of his and other low-lying island nations. In the final stage of negotiations, some were chanting, “1.5.”
The acknowledgment last week from the United Nations that the planet is going to breach that limit was not a surprise to anyone tracking global temperatures, which keep rising.
But it nonetheless formalized a dire outcome: Amid scant progress from global powers to cut pollution from fossil fuels, vulnerable countries will now spend decades, or perhaps centuries, confronting the very climate scenario they’d once said would be untenable.
But, weirdly, all those Caribbean and other small nations refuse to give up their airports, heliports, cruise ship ports, shipping ports, cars, trucks, and everything fossil fuels. So, if it spells the total demise then it’s self caused, per their cult talking points.
And though that puts them face-to-face with the concerns they’d held in Paris, about rising sea levels and intensifying disasters, they also face new risks few could have imagined a decade ago. Cutbacks in aid from wealthy nations, including the United States, have reduced the humanitarian safety net. The United States, the world’s largest historical emitter, has also withdrawn from the Paris Agreement, as well as from funds meant to help developing countries deal with climate change.
Poorer nations say these changes threaten to make the 1.5 Celsius breach even rockier, leaving them fewer resources to deal with disasters while widening global inequities.
In other words, it’s about the money. Surprise!
Well, duhhh! Was there ever an international agreement which would be so obviously ignored as the Paris Climate agreement?
President Obama had changes made, to specifically structure it in a way which would not require congressional ratification, because he knew it would not pass. That’s hardly a new thing: President Clinton sent Vice President Gore to Kyoto to sign that climate treaty, but refused to submit it to the Senate for ratification, because he knew it would be rejected.
Then came 2016, and we elected a President who promised to withdraw from the Paris agreement. Come 2020, the dullard from Delaware was elected, and as President he ‘reinstated’ our signature, but didn’t really do anything to implement it, despite his administration being run by young, woke staffers due to Mr Biden’s increasing dementia.
In 2024, intelligent Americans once again elected Donald Trump.
But that’s just the United States: the wealthy Western democracies mostly missed their commitments as well, because it was just too expensive, and they had other problems, including an almost unchecked influx of welfare-dependent third worlders. The wealthier European countries had to prop up the PIGS — Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Spain — countries who were part of the European Union but economically weak. Those were all costs and problems that had to be addressed immediately, as opposed to worrying what the climate would be in 2100.
