Cooling from air conditioning saves lives — more than 5,000 a year in the United States alone — but it also heats up the planet and taxes our electrical grid, scientists say.
As the world warms, heat waves strike nearly every continent and United Nations officials estimate that about half a million people die a year from heat, air conditioning is needed and being used more than ever. A study in Nature Health reported Monday that air conditioning saved nearly 58,000 lives between 2010 and 2020 in the U.S. Air conditioning use is skyrocketing around the world, with electricity demand from cooling expected to triple, according to the International Energy Agency and the United Nations Environment Programme.
It’s also more of a problem than ever. Because most of the electricity for cooling comes from the burning of fossil fuels, the U.N. projects the amount of heat-trapping gas spewed into the atmosphere from air conditioning use to rise from 4.5 billion to 7.2 billion tons in the next 25 years or so. That 7.2 billion tons is almost as much as the carbon pollution from the United States and Europe now.
Well, let us build nuclear power plants. Even Michael Mann and some other leading climahysterics are in favor of them. We can have Gen 6 and mini-nuclear plants, and then this would be no problem, at least according to climate cult dogma about CO2.
But, until the cult has reasonable solutions, they can f*** right off.
As air conditioning units use refrigerants to pull heat out of the air, to make the air cooler for use inside, what happens to the heat pulled out of the air? It gets dumped into the outside atmosphere. So, I have to ask: how much of that ‘transported’ heat contributes to exterior temperatures being recorded?
Current temperature at Old Creekmore Farm: 91.7º F, with a heat index of 101.3º F. Yes, we have the AC on. Sadly, the power plant runs on natural gas, and not coal.
According to experts (one refrigeration engineer): The direct effects of A/C (cooling air with refrigerants and “pumping” the heat outside) largely balances out. But since entropy always wins, the heat transfer is never 100% efficent, and contributes a little to warming.
Although leaked refrigerants ARE potent greenhouse gases they don’t appear to be a significant contributor.
By far the greatest warming effect comes from the greenhouse gases produced from electricity generation from coal and gas.
Currently, 99° F in St Louis County MO, heat index 104° F. About 15% of MO power comes from the Calloway nuclear power plant.
