With Puerto Rico’s water crisis, climate change meets ineptitude
Last week in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the water taps ran dry.
The Caribbean island experienced its driest July on record, with more than 60% of the territory — more than 3 million residents — facing drought conditions according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
In fact, PR has a history of droughts. That’s a condition based on where it is located.
Large trucks filled with potable water have been sent throughout the island to help residents, with the sick and elderly given preference.
But this dire water situation didn’t just happen overnight or even over the course of the past few months.
“For decades, communities have lived without fair access to water resources, and experts have repeatedly warned that the lack of infrastructure maintenance and poor watershed management would lead Puerto Rico to the water crisis it faces today.”
So, pretty much incompetence. Poor planning. Bad government. I wonder how much money went into graft, waste, and fraud rather than the infrastructure, especially as the population of PR has grown, as has the tourist industry?
“The challenge comes from two key issues,” Gossett Navarro said. “One is an ongoing challenge that we’ve had for decades related to infrastructure and then there are the challenges that get exacerbated by the climate crisis … we’re struggling with a drought and it’s making the infrastructure issues even worse.”
Sigh.
It’s currently estimated that approximately 60% of water that travels through Puerto Rico’s geriatric pipes is lost due to leaks and other infrastructural issues, Navarro mentioned.
So even when it does rain, and a percentage of that water lands in accessible reservoirs, citizens are only able to use a fraction of that fraction.
That’s not ‘climate change’.

Driest July on record. Also Colorado River running out of water and getting close to Deadpool for electric generation. So little rain in the Western states beef cattle herd is lowest numbered in 75 years and prices at record highs.
Puerto Rico is hardly the only place with “geriatric” water pipes! Cities and small towns across the fruited plain have neglected water pipes, being as they are out of sight, out of mind, and out of budget. Add to that the terra cotta sewer pipes in hundreds, maybe thousands of our older cities, sewer lines which have always been vulnerable to invading tree roots. No one wants to think of what lies below.
Much of our infrastructure is in terrible shape, simply because it was engineered to century-old standards and is a century old. Our electric grid is above ground, because that worked and was the fastest way to get sparktricity to everyone, and it comes down every time there’s a bad storm or ice or some drunken Missourian runs off the road and into a transformer pole. The obvious solution is to put it underground, but that would cost billions, and even then would be limited to urban areas.
Mr Dana is correct that our infrastructure is deteriorating – especially our “hidden” infrastructure. Trillions $$$ would be required to fix it. We need that much money every year for our Ministry of War and the contractors (donors).
Other than rural electrification, which was definitely pushed by the federal government, most utility infrastructure was built and installed by private companies, and it will be private companies which will have to modernize the systems.
But no one ever seems to think about this stuff! When towns have to tear up the streets to install new water or sewer lines, no one seems to push for the electric and cable utilities to bury their systems at the same time, while the street is torn open.
We see buried electric, telephone, and cable service in new subdivisions, where cities mandate such before approving the project. And, of course, we would have some cities mandate no natural gas service, because Democrats are esentially stupid.
Repubicuns have controlled America for a long time. They have rigged the Supreme Court, the House, many statehouses and of course the Senate was designed to protect white christian male sensitivities. Good job fellas!

Mr. Drama Queen at it again-“rigged the Supreme Court”. You mean the SC where all justices are approved by the Senate? Let us know what’s being “rigged”. “Senate designed to protect white Christian male sensitivities”. How so? If they meet the requirements, anyone can be elected to the Senate, including white Christian males. And if the institution is deemed faulty, there’s ways to change it via the Constitution.
The Denier Chief whines about “rigged the Supreme Court”. Look up “Federalist Society” and “Supreme Court”. Look up “Merrick Garland”.
A Senator from CA represents about 20 million people, while a Senator from WY represents about 300,000.
The Repubicun majority in the Senate was elected by about 46% of the voters.
Repubicunts are likely to lose the House if Donny permits free and fair elections. The Senate is a toss-up.
