WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is ordering the U.S. Navy to remove the advanced system used to launch fighter jets from its newest type of aircraft carrier and return to using older steam catapults that he has long said he prefers, according to a directive issued Thursday.
The new mandate would likely cost billions of dollars and revert the Navy’s most advanced ships to a system that takes more sailors to operate and is more difficult to maintain.
The memo directs the Pentagon and the Navy to present Trump with plans to remove the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, also known as EMALS, within two months. It also says the Ford-class carrier’s electromagnetic weapons elevators should be replaced.
Obviously there’s more to the President’s reasoning than preference like reliability and maintenance issues that you and the AP obviously overlooked.

During his first presidency, he famously said the Navy should return to “goddamn steam”, and last month he again dismissed the system as too complex and inferior. Unfortunately for the President, the technology has since matured, and the argument for a return to steam is about a decade out of date. Don argued the new system was “very complicated” and suggested that “you have to be Albert Einstein to figure it out.” Rather than understand it, he wants to eliminate it! Whoosh!!!
He likes the loud “whoosh” from the steam!! After all, his years as a landlord, golfer, “engineer” and “Navy pilot” rule!!
The Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) provides greater precision and faster recharge compared to steam. EMALS was first installed on the lead ship of the Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford, around 2015.
Excuse real Americans if we’ve lost a soupçon of confidence in Mr trump’s “reasoning”. We can hope that wiser minds in the Navy will prevail, saving taxpayers billions $$$.

The lead investor in a South Korean aluminum company that has challenged Commerce Department penalties on certain exports from South Korea to the United States made a $2 million payment last year to President Trump’s holding company.
The payment by the parent company, Base Group, was revealed for the first time in Mr. Trump’s annual financial disclosure form released in late June.
The document offered only a cryptic explanation for the payment, stating that it was part of a “letter of intent” and a “nonrefundable development fee.” In statements to The New York Times, the company and the Trump family said the payment relates to a still-unannounced golf course project.
Base Group has spent nearly a decade courting the Trump family, exclusively selling Trump-branded wine in South Korea and, more recently, hosting Mr. Trump’s son Eric at its Seoul headquarters.
