EPA Ordered—Again—to Release $2.8 Billion in Climate Justice Funds
A South Carolina federal judge this week ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to resume distributing funds designed to address environmental and health challenges in underserved communities.
In June, US District Judge Richard Gergel voided the Trump administration’s termination of the $2.8 billion Environmental and Climate Justice Block Grant Program. But the court ruling did not explicitly require the Environmental Protection Agency to resume distributing the block grants. (snip)
After reviewing additional court filings from both sides, Gergel confirmed this week that the EPA must resume distributing the grant funds. He rejected the Trump administration’s argument that his decision “required no further agency action.” (snip)
Gergel ordered that the agency “must comply with its statutory obligations to administer the [Environmental and Climate Justice] Program” through the end of September, when the grants were originally scheduled to expire under President Joe Biden. (snip)
The Environmental and Climate Justice Block Grant Program, created under the Biden-era Inflation Reduction Act, was designed to help communities address problems like air pollution and extreme heat and bolster local infrastructure, according to federal budget documents.
OK, here’s how this should work: where groups are specified, the EPA should keep a massive watchful eye on where the money goes. Is it going in people’s pockets, flowing through lots of NGOS and companies, or helping the people it was meant to help? Prosecute any fraud. For where it’s not specified, put it to other things with a “hey, you wanted us to spend it, we did. Just not the way you like.”
I suspect that the EPA’s lawyers will file an appeal in an attempt to run the clock out.

One of my favorite television shows, the recently ended Blue Bloods, pointed out several times that the vast majority of police officers never have to fire their weapons in the line of duty, but every season was filled with officers being shot at, and sometimes killed, and officers having to fire back, sometimes killing the criminals. After all, most police work is boring for the vast majority of the time, and boring does not draw audiences.
