Climate change is increasing tornado risk in Ukraine
Due to global warming, the conditions for tornado formation in Ukraine are becoming increasingly favorable.
Their formation is aided by a sharp temperature contrast: after prolonged heat, cold air breaches into Ukraine, triggering strong convection, Mammatus clouds form, which initiate the rotation of mesocyclones.
As a result, the geographic reach of tornadoes is expanding – in recent years they are seen more and more often in Kyiv Oblast, Rivne Oblast, Ternopil Oblast, and Lviv Oblast.
According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, 90% of tornadoes in Ukraine go unnoticed and are officially not registered. They sweep over sparsely populated settlements, forests or fields, leaving behind fallen trees that are detected by satellites.
