Newsom Says Trump’s Justice Department Is Investigating Him and His Wife

Federal agents have questioned friends and associates of Gov. Gavin Newsom of California and his wife, Mr. Newsom said on Monday in a video in which he accused President Trump of using the Justice Department to punish a political enemy.

The full scope of any investigation remains unclear. But Mr. Newsom’s aides say part of the federal investigation appears to focus on his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. Former employees of the governor and people affiliated with his wife’s nonprofit groups are among those who have been questioned by agents, according to the governor’s office.

A person familiar with the matter confirmed that multiple federal investigations were underway related to the governor, including one looking at his wife’s finances. But the person disputed Mr. Newsom’s assertion that the investigations were politically motivated, and said they had been initiated by federal law enforcement officials in California, not launched by officials in Washington. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly. (big snip)

Mr. Newsom’s office said the investigation is a fresh attempt to smear him after the federal prosecution of his former chief of staff revealed no misconduct by the governor. The former chief of staff, Dana Williamson, pleaded guilty last month to three felonies in a sprawling corruption case.

When Ms. Williamson was indicted last year, her attorney said that federal agents first approached her during the Biden administration. She was working for Mr. Newsom at the time, and the agents asked her if she would cooperate in an investigation of the governor. She replied that she had no information to give them because she had never witnessed any criminal conduct by Mr. Newsom.

The actual investigation goes back either to early 2025 or even further in the late Biden admin as federal agents started investigating Gavin’s wife, and, him as a byproduct, for all the crazy connections between Jennifer’s companies and state money. There have been accusations for a long, long time about how shady it all looked. Remember how Gavin was going to give all those new parents diapers and the contract was going through a company for which Jennifer was linked?

The Wall Street Journal notes that the investigation was started by federal law enforcement in California during Biden admin, not by political folks in Washington under Trump. The Washington Post says the same thing.

Here’s an interesting thing, though: at what point does this whole scam become criminal? The whole “govt gives money to NGOs who skim off a lot of money to sort of do the job and then some makes it back to politicians” thing has been normalized at the federal, state, county, and local levels. Govt contracts do not seem to dictate how much payment should be to NGOs (organizations, companies, individuals), or if they can even do the job, since most can’t, they just take a cut to go and hire other NGOs who can’t do the job but take a cut to hire others, till someone can finally do the job. This is how you end up with 20% of USAID money actually going to projects. At what point is this a criminal violation such as defrauding the government? Fraud? Other felonies?

What Democrats who defend this Business As Usual do not get is that if this whole pipeline of waste, graft, and abuse was ended there would be a lot more money to help people. If a company took $4 million to do a job feeding kids and spent $3.8 million on feeding the kids (company does need to get paid, right?) instead of $800,000 (20%), that would be a good thing, right?
