New Zealand:Government brings certainty to climate change tort law
New Zealand plans to amend the country’s climate law to prohibit liability arising from climate change damages. The Government has clarified that these amendments will provide businesses with certainty around their obligations.
The amended Climate Change Response Act 2002 will apply to both current and future court proceedings, including a current High Court case brought against six major emitters.
New Zealand’s Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith in an announcement on 12 May 2026 said, “The Government will amend the Climate Change Response Act 2002 to prevent findings of liability for tort for climate change damage or harm caused by greenhouse gas emissions in both current and future proceedings before the courts.
“The Government is acting now to provide legal clarity and certainty and to remove the possible development of a new regime that contradicts the framework Parliament has already enacted to respond to climate change. Our government is committed to fixing the basics, and certainty of law is essential for businesses to operate, attracting overseas investment, and stimulating economic growth.”
What does all this mean?
Climate change activists and critiques have, however, opposed the proposed amendments in the law. They said this is a controversial move that would shield polluters from climate lawsuits and undermine the rule of law.
The nation will supposedly still meet their scam obligations under the Climate Change Response Act (until they can weaken it and then kill it), but, what they’re saying is that the courts are not the place for climalawfare suits.

We get that Deniers finally recognized the overwhelming evidence that the Earth is warming. Kudos. Better late than never.
Recall that Denier leaders like Teach and Tony WUWT accused scientists of faking the temperature data until skeptics such as Spencer and Muller finally confirmed the truth.
Funded by the conservative Koch Foundation, prominent skeptic Richard Muller (UC) ran a huuge project that analyzed billions of data points. In 2011, the team published results demonstrating that the Earth’s land had warmed by roughly 2.5F over the preceding 250 years. Even Tony WUWT finally accepted the truth. Next, the Deniers started attacking the cause.
Many Deniers deny the scientific underpinnings of warming. Many now accept the reality but argue the cure (decarbonization) is worse than the disease. Essentially, a distinction without a difference.

Tom Karl, a director at NOAA’s National Climate Data Center, stated at a conference in 1989 that “analysis of the warming since 1881 shows most of the increase in global temperatures happened before 1919 before the most recent rise in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. While the global climate warmed overall since 1881, it actually cooled from 1921 to 1979.”

Many people feny that greenhouse gases caused by burning largely caused by burning fossil fuels ate changing the climate faster than st any time that we know .
These rapid climate changes will make life/survival more difficult for the most disadvantaged of humanity.

What do you mean by “verified”? Are you claiming all the data are faked? Are the CO2 levels verified? How about the mean global surface temperature? Stratospheric cooling (and reduced IR wavelengths absorbed by CO2)?
So are you now claiming the Earth hasn’t warmed as much as measured?
You may be thinking of the early 20th-century warming period (roughly 1910–1940), which occurred before CO2 concentrations were as high as now. Climatologists, including Karl, have studied this period and attribute it to a combination of natural climate variability (like solar changes and ocean cycles).

Are you really claiming the climated scientists successfully suppressed this data?
“Are you really saying it…”. Don’t believe your own eyes and ears? He said it, and there’s no graph that shows that anymore. How did the earth cool for 58 years as CO2 went up?
“Verified” As I’ve always said, it’s never been verified with cause-effect evidence that CO2 is doing the warming. What you should be concerned about is why hasn’t anyone been able to show experimentally the agw theory-with trillions spent. “Are you claiming data was faked?” I’m simply relaying what Karl said.
