Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla., announced Tuesday she is resigning from the House of Representatives after Republicans vowed to force a vote to expel her from the chamber.

“This fight is far from over,” Cherfilus-McCormick, who was indicted by a grand jury last year for allegedly stealing COVID-19 emergency funds, added in her statement.

She is facing 53 years in prison as part of a separate criminal indictment.

Two “U.S. Embassy employees” died in Mexico in an auto accdent around 2 AM in northern Mexico.

The two United States Embassy personnel who were killed in a car accident in Mexico were working for the CIA on counternarcotics operations with Mexican authorities, according to a U.S. official and another source familiar with the matter.

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson seemed to indicate the Americans were involved in the drug raid in a statement.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two U.S. Embassy personnel, the Director of Chihuahua’s State Investigation Agency (AEI), and an AEI officer in this accident. We honor their dedication and tireless efforts to confront one of the greatest challenges of our time,” Johnson said. “This tragedy is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by those Mexican and U.S. officials who are dedicated to protecting our communities. It strengthens our resolve to continue their mission and advance our shared commitment to security and justice, to protect our people.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said during a news briefing Tuesday that Mexican authorities are investigating what the two American embassy personnel “were doing and which agency they belonged to,” in response to a reporter’s question on reports that they were affiliated with the CIA.
