A two-year-old detained in a family detention center in Dilley, Texas, is sick and not getting adequate help, said Joaquin Castro, a Democratic congressman from San Antonio. The boy, Kaleth, has a fever and is not eating the food served at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center, which Castro said detainees have complained of having mold and worms.
“When his mother asked for help, the staff said it was all ‘mental’,” Castro wrote in a post on X. “A vulnerable child at the Dilley trailer prison was suffering and ICE denied their reality and their needs. It’s shameful and must stop.”

Portland cement, the grey powder which reacts with water to form the crystalline structure of concrete — and yes, it is a crystalline structure, even if it doesn’t look like it — is manufactured by burning the ingredients in a rotary kiln at over 2200º F to form a ‘clinker,’ which must then be ground down to a very fine powder. A tremendous amount of natural gas must be used to obtain this temperature, and yes, the manufacture of Portland cement has major carbon emissions.
Cement production is responsible for approximately 7-8% of global anthropogenic carbon emissions.
Does cement have valid uses? Duh. Are there alternatives to natural gas for producing clinker? Yes, but apparently not quite ready for prime time.
Perspective: Global CO2 emissions are driven by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) for energy, which accounts for nearly 90% of all carbon dioxide emissions. Major sources include electricity/heat generation (29.7%), transportation (13.7%), manufacturing (12.7%), and land-use changes like deforestation (around 10%).
For now we can live with 7-8% from cement making.
