Trump declares fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday classifying fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction, giving the U.S. government additional legal firepower in its efforts to combat illegal trafficking of the synthetic drug.
The executive order cites the lethality of the drug, which kills tens of thousands of Americans every year, and the fact that transnational criminal groups the Trump administration has designated as foreign terrorist organizations use the sale of fentanyl to fund activities that undermine U.S. national security.
Speaking in the Oval Office as he signed the order, the president said the amount of drugs coming into the U.S. by sea has decreased by 94 percent (most drugs, including fentanyl, enter the U.S. via land ports of entry). Trump added that drug flows are “a direct military threat to the United States of America.”
The administration has focused considerable resources on combating fentanyl as part of its efforts to secure the U.S. border with Mexico. Top administration officials have argued that Trump’s strict immigration limits and border security measures have led to a drop in domestic consumption of fentanyl.
This is a good thing, but, how soon till Democrats sue over this, trying to block this? Or some rogue leftist judge declares the EO invalid?
The timing of the designation is striking, as speculation mounts that the U.S. will carry out land strikes against alleged drug trafficking targets on Venezuelan soil as part of its pressure campaign against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Declaring fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction would give the U.S. additional legal justification to use military force against Venezuela.
Claims that Iraq still possessed WMDs were used as a legal justification for the invasion of the Middle Eastern country and the overthrow of its then-leader Saddam Hussein under the George W. Bush administration.

How does this work? Fentanyl is an FDA-approved medicine manufactured by J&J, Purdue, Teva in the U.S. used in surgery and pain management.
Illicit fentanyl comes from Mexican labs using precursors from China (and India). Tens of thousands (48,422 in 2024) of Americans DO die from fentanyl ODs each year.
Colombia produces most of our cocaine which reaches the U.S. through Mexico. Meth comes from Mexico.

Fentanyl is actually a useful drug in a controlled medical setting, and I do wonder how this order will affect that.
I had a CT guided biopsy of a lung nodule in 2017, and was told they were using fentanyl as the anesthetic. I was to have conscious sedation, in which I wouldn’t be completely zonked, but kind of drowsy for the procedure.
As it turned out, I was completely conscious throughout the procedure, but it was painless nevertheless. Fentanyl is so potent that it has to be administered very carefully, and the anesthesiologist misunderestimated the amount I would need. As I said, the procedure was painless, so no harm, no foul. But the point is that even trained anesthesiologists can get the necessary dosages wrong.
How does bombing boats in international waters curb drug use in the U.S., since most of the illicit drug traffic comes through Mexico?
One would think bombing cartel boats carrying illicit drugs would be considered a deterrent for future drug smugglers.

People in prison with sentences of 20+ years or life should be given as much fentanyl as they want. It’s not like they are ever going to do anything productive with their lives. May as well be sedate while they do nothing. Prisons should have free access to fentanyl captured by other Law enforces, not use the high quality pharma sources.
Why not drop a hydrogen bomb on Mexico? Wouldn’t that solve almost all our drug and immigration problems, at least until U.S. drug users found other sources?
Or alternatively, perhaps we should look at ways to reduce U.S. demand for drugs… it’s not as if the Colombians or Mexicans are forcing Americans to snort or shoot up.
