‘Change course now’: humanity has missed 1.5C climate target, says UN head
Humanity has failed to limit global heating to 1.5C and must change course immediately, the secretary general of the UN has warned.
In his only interview before next month’s Cop30 climate summit, António Guterres acknowledged it is now “inevitable” that humanity will overshoot the target in the Paris climate agreement, with “devastating consequences” for the world.
He urged the leaders who will gather in the Brazilian rainforest city of Belém to realise that the longer they delay cutting emissions, the greater the danger of passing catastrophic “tipping points” in the Amazon, the Arctic and the oceans.
“Let’s recognise our failure,” he told the Guardian and Amazon-based news organisation Sumaúma. “The truth is that we have failed to avoid an overshooting above 1.5C in the next few years. And that going above 1.5C has devastating consequences. Some of these devastating consequences are tipping points, be it in the Amazon, be it in Greenland, or western Antarctica or the coral reefs.
“Our failure”? How about the failure of all the Elites who have done absolutely zero to reduce their own carbon footprints? Imagine what might have happened if all the Warmists had given up their own use of fossil fuels and made their own lives carbon neutral? Even cut their carbon footprints in half? This could have been solved. If the whole thing was real, of course.
He said the priority at Cop30 was to shift direction: “It is absolutely indispensable to change course in order to make sure that the overshoot is as short as possible and as low in intensity as possible to avoid tipping points like the Amazon. We don’t want to see the Amazon as a savannah. But that is a real risk if we don’t change course and if we don’t make a dramatic decrease of emissions as soon as possible.”
Is this the same COP30 where 40K will take fossil fueled flights from around the world then take fossil fueled vehicles to the venue traveling down a road which was built by chopping down lots of the Amazon?
Fewer than a third of the world’s nations (62 out of 197) have sent in their climate action plans, known as nationally determined contributions (NDCs) under the Paris agreement. The US under Donald Trump has abandoned the process. Europe has promised but so far failed to deliver. China, the world’s biggest emitter, has been accused of undercommitting.
Well, that’s weird? It’s almost like most do not actually care to go beyond the pledges.

Since the Earth just reached 1.5C are you asking about changes in the past few months? Really.
During the run-up to the 1.5C increase we’ve seen a decrease in ocean pH; increase in sea level, decrease in glaciers and ice sheets; stronger hurricanes and typhoons, changing patterns of tornado tracks; changes in distributions of plants, animals, fungi and disease vectors; droughts, floods, heatwaves; more severe wildfires…
As I said, we’ll adapt and adjust. We have no choice. So just relax.

Well from my own personal observations about changes i have witnessed
Growing up west of Boston we would occasionally have skating on shallow cranberry bogs before Thanksgiving. Most years we would get some safe pond ice using last years skates before Christmass.
We would commonly play tackle football on frost frozen ground before thanksgiving. Our towns hockey team would practice on pond ice and compete on what I still call artificial ice. My first date was taking a girl to an ice skating date in a rink. Now ? years will go buy before the town allows ANY ice skating on ponds because pond ice is not safe. Although the 1.5C rise is the average planet rise, some regions have shown more, some less. NJ lobster harvest 90% down because eggs float to the surface and need a specific temp to change to larvae and sink. Likewise NY and CN have lost their lobster industry. MA is next you can see it in the lobster permit prices dropping. Remember 2/3s of that 1.5C change has has happened in the last 60 years. The change has not been steady the rate of change dy/dx hac been increasing. bugs normally associated in the south are moving north with warmer temps.
