ICE raids on Mississippi food processing plants result in 680 arrests
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Wednesday that its officers had raided seven food processing plants in Mississippi and detained approximately 680 “removable aliens” in what a federal prosecutor described as “the largest single-state immigration enforcement operation in our nation’s history.”
Nearly 600 ICE agents swarmed the plants in Bay Springs, Carthage, Canton, Morton, Pelahatchie and Sebastapol, surrounding the perimeters to keep workers from fleeing.
“The execution of federal search warrants today was simply about enforcing the rule of law in our state and throughout our great country,” U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst said in a statement. ” I commend these federal agents, our state and local law enforcement partners, and our federal prosecutors for their professionalism and dedication to ensure that those who violate our laws are held accountable.”
Hopefully, everyone involved in running the plants will see civil and even criminal penalties if it can be shown that they did not do their due diligence to make sure the workers were authorized to work. And it should be noted that anyone not illegal was let go.

The undocumented are not technically criminals, as being in the US without documentation is a civil offense at the risk of deportation after due process.

You misunderstood me. The amnesty I proposed is actually a thirty day window for employers to self-incriminate and out the illegals, in exchange for a suspended sentence. If they don’t do it in thirty days, then too bad, so sad, if they get caught it’s twenty years in prison.

That depends on what the risks actually are. When the risks of getting caught in the first place are negligible — and with a guesstimated 11.3 million illegals here, those risks apparently are negligible — and the risks of going to jail for it are similarly small, yeah, might as well risk it.
What we need to do is make those risks non-negligible, make the odds of getting caught and seriously punished substantial enough that it’s not a good choice. The parents who want to give their children a better life will think thrice about it if getting caught means jail, and separation from their children, their children sent to foster care back in Mexico.

Thankfully, some church groups are taking care of the children (many likely US citizens) left behind by the operation.

To begin with, the agencies charged with border security would receive new technology, new facilities, and more people to stop, process, and deport illegal immigrants. But while security might start at our borders, it doesn’t end there. Millions of undocumented immigrants live and work here without our knowing their identity or their background. We need to strike a workable bargain with them. They have to acknowledge that breaking our immigration laws was wrong. They must pay a penalty, and abide by all of our laws going forward. They must earn the right to stay over a 6-year period, and then they must wait another 5 years as legal permanent residents before they become citizens…..BARAK OBAMA on the senate floor in 2007.
