Nobel Peace Prize: You’re Kidding, Right?

Mohamed ElBaradei and the International Atomic Energy Agency that he heads won the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize Friday for their efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons.

ElBaradei, a 63-year-old lawyer from Egypt, has headed the U.N. nuclear agency as it grappled with the crisis in Iraq and the ongoing efforts to prevent North Korea and Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. (via WRAL)

OK, this pick is not quite as bad as Yassar Arafat, Jimmy Carter, and Kofi Annan/UN, but, really what has the IAEA done? They do not even really talk a good game, considering they wear their super soft shoes regarding Iraq. Oh, and how about this?

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohammad El Baradei, is alarmed at the discovery in Libya of a set of drawings on how to develop nuclear weapons.

The drawings were found by an IAEA team that Libya recently allowed full access to its nuclear facilities.

Dr El Baradei says it is proof of an underground trade in nuclear weapons technology.

Woops! And back in September 2004

VIENNA, Austria — More than 40 countries with peaceful nuclear programs could retool them to make weapons, the head of the U.N. atomic watchdog agency said yesterday amid new U.S. and European demands that Iran give up technology capable of producing such arms.

Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, suggested in a keynote address to the IAEA general conference that it was time to tighten world policing of nuclear activities and to stop relying on information volunteered by countries.

Beyond the declared nuclear arms-holding countries, "some estimates indicate that 40 countries or more now have the know-how to produce nuclear weapons," he said.

Yes, the IAEA has done a wonderful job of stopping nuclear weapons proliferation.

Look, it’s not that I think ElBaradei is doing a bad job, though he and the IAEA are a little chicken-shit regarding Iran, it’s just that they really haven’t done a whole lot to promote peace, especially considering their chicken-shit stance regarding Iran. Do they really deserve the Peace Prize? Gotta be someone out there more worthy. Maybe next year they will give the Prize to Code Pink (sic)

Come on Teach, you don’t really believe the “peace” prize is anything other than a political tool, do you? I lost all faith in it with Arafat.
