Memorial Day Monday: One Marine

Will remain at the top as a Sticky Post for the Day.

Today is Memorial Day. A day to remember all those who died in the service of our special country

ARLINGTON, Va. – Just a few years ago, Lance Cpl. Steven Szwydek was a classmate of students at a high school in the mountains of Pennsylvania’s Fulton County. Now the fallen Marine is part of their history lesson. On separate days this spring, students from all three high schools in his home county visited Arlington National Cemetery, where they stopped for a moment of silence at his white tombstone. The bus trips were paid for by a memorial fund established by Szwydek’s parents.

Their quiet son ā€” a history buff who loved to hunt deer ā€” was 20 when he was killed in 2005 by a roadside bomb during his second tour in Iraq.

His mother, Nancy Szwydek, is a strong supporter of President Bush and the Iraq war but said the trips are not about politics or trying to influence students to join the military. She and her husband don’t accompany the classes on the trips.

She sees the annual visits as a way to teach students "to respect our freedom." Teachers say the trips are as much about establishing connections ā€” between kids growing up in a rural county, and world events.

That is a considerably better way of honoring one of our fallen hero’s, then using Memorial Day to push their own "America must lose" policies, such as John Edwards’ "10 things you can do over Memorial Day weekend to support the troops and end the war."

More: One example would be Bill Richardson, as highlighted by Michelle Malkin.

There are many other examples of progressives using Memorial Day weekend to push their own agendas, which tend to be based on not just BDS, but on ADS (America Derangement Syndrome) as well. I shan’t link or highlight them. Not on this day.

Some good folks worth reading:

More to come as I run across them.

  2. John Edwards is a disgrace to our nation. Trying to use Memorial Day to further his political gain.

You might want to check out what I posted. It was written by a student. He “gets it” about what patriotism and serving mean!

  3. Exactly right, Darth!

You betcha, Edwards is an embarrasment. Every time someone mentions he is from NC, I get real angry.
