You know what would be a lot less expensive? If Democrats would simply allow DHS to deport illegals back to their own countries without all the caterwauling
Senate Fact Finders Decry Costs of Migrant Detention at Guantánamo
In August, a team of Senate staff members inspected the Trump administration’s migrant detention operations at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. They found 445 government employees assigned to the site, mostly U.S. military members on temporary deployment, and zero migrants.
The findings were released Friday, in the latest report to criticize the cost of the operation. Early in his second administration, President Trump ordered the Homeland Security and Defense Departments to get ready to hold tens of thousands of migrants designated for deportation at Guantánamo. About 850 migrants have been held there since February 2025.
So, wait, were there illegals there or not? Also, there are going to be military members at Gitmo regardless
“This comes at a significant cost to taxpayers and undermines military readiness,” according to the report, released by Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the senior Democrat on the Judiciary Committee.
How so? Military members are going to be at Gitmo regardless. And not every member is a frontline fighter
The study also found the Guantánamo operation has cost more than $100 million, which means the government has spent $118,000 to house each detainee there.
How much is the US government, the state governments, and local governments spending on housing illegals, feeding them, clothing them, etc, money which could be used for Americans?
Government officials described the Guantánamo operation as a way station for detainees being deported. The report said the average length of stay for the 850 men was 20 to 30 days. Some were held for months.
Let us skip the detention methods and just boot the illegals out. If they do not want to go to their home nation let them pick a country and put them on a plane and sayonora.
Only Democratic staff members took part in compiling the report. It follows a critical study by the Government Accountability Office of wasteful overall spending practices by the Trump administration’s detention and deportation operations. It included the $2.85 million it spent on tent housing for 5,000 detainees that was dismantled and never occupied. The tents, it turned out, did not meet federal detention standards.
Surprise! Democrat hit piece fed to the NY Times.

Our esteemed host began:
Haven’t I been saying this all along? Ship them home immediately! If they have a case to make, they can make it at the American embassies and consulates in their home countries.
Dana Cases are not supposed tobe judged in foreign countries by employees of the executive branch.
Cases are supposed to be adjudicated in the USA by immigration courts where the accused as a constitutional right to be represented by an attorney.
Please respect the Constitution of my country
It’s not exactly clear what these activists are complaining about. They need to pick a lane. Are they angry that not enough immigrants are being sent to GITMO? Or that too many are being sent?
I don’t remember a peep out of these activists or anyone in the news media when the Biden Administration was spending BILLIONS on no-bid contracts given to friends of theirs for the purpose of creating temporary immigrant shelters, when many of those shelters never sheltered a single person. So, clearly, they don’t care that the government is wasting money on stuff it doesn’t use.
It seems the only thing they are angry about is TRUUUUMMMP!
Obviously, Mr Dana is correct that places like this really are just temporary shelters while passengers are sorted and moved along home. It might surprise people who live in hives and have no experience in the real world, but when an undocumented person is collected up off the street, there is some amount of work that goes into properly identifying them and their country of origin. This takes even longer when the person is uncooperative and uses fake names, pretends to only understand obscure languages, and lies about their country of origin. Then there are diplomatic transactions required to ensure the person gets appropriate national ID and visas to enter their home country. None of that is as instantaneous as it was during the Biden administration, when for 4 years the USA had no national government at all, for anyone who wanted to come to the USA.
The amount of time anyone spends in such a place can be drastically reduced if they cooperate and provide legit national ID documents from their home countries that they previously pretended they didn’t have.
I don’t know what country Alias is referring to, but none of that is in the Constitution of the USA. Deporting foreign citizens is an administrative matter, not a criminal matter. No courts, judges or legal constitutional rights are at issue. Immigration courts are under the federal executive branch, not the Judiciary. If anything, under international law, Foreigners have a right to be repatriated without burdensome delays and no nation should hold them without due process.
