ICE arrests in North Carolina top 5,000 in 2026 so far; leading to fear, anxiety, advocates say
More than 5,000 people have been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in North Carolina so far this year, according to data from the Deportation Data Project analyzed by the ABC News Data Team.
The data shows ICE detained more than 253,000 people nationwide this year. In North Carolina alone, ICE apprehended more than 5,000 people, including at least 441 arrests in the Raleigh area.
Immigration advocates and attorneys in the Triangle say increased enforcement activity is contributing to fear and anxiety among immigrants and their families.
“We’re definitely seeing increased activity with this,” said Trey DeBrine, an immigration law attorney with Sivaraman Immigration Law.

“People with status are afraid to do things like drive, because they think, ‘I’m gonna get pulled over, I’m gonna get arrested, and I’m gonna get put into ICE custody,'” DeBrine said.
Mental health advocates say the heightened concern is affecting immigrant and refugee communities across North Carolina.
“Because of this fear, it’s having an effect overall in the quality of life of North Carolinians,” said Molly Hayes, head of learning and dissemination at El Futuro.
Good. They should be afraid. And they can solve this by leaving the US.
