Heck, anyone on a visa should have to return to their home country to potentially renew their visa or change that status. Let’s start with the as usual apoplectic NY Times
Green Card Seekers Must Leave U.S. to Apply, Trump Administration Says
The Trump administration said on Friday that most foreigners seeking green cards will have to return to their home countries to apply, an extraordinary change that could make it more difficult for hundreds of thousands of people to obtain permanent residency.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the agency that oversees the legal immigration system, said it would grant green cards to people inside the country only in “extraordinary circumstances.” People applying for permanent residency will have to go through consular processing outside the country instead, according to a memo issued by the agency.
“This policy allows our immigration system to function as the law intended instead of incentivizing loopholes,” Zach Kahler, a spokesman for the agency, said in a statement. “When aliens apply from their home country, it reduces the need to find and remove those who decide to slip into the shadows and remain in the U.S. illegally after being denied residency.”
The change is likely to lead to more families being separated as spouses or relatives wait for decisions on their applications, immigration lawyers and former homeland security officials said. It could also lead to longer processing times as consulates around the world manage an influx of new cases.
Well, hey, the families are part of the visa, so, they should head back to their home countries, too. People on visas shouldn’t be given a free pass to just stick around and stick around and stick around. Let’s go to the slightly less upset and more journalistic NBC News
The Trump administration said Friday that people with temporary visas seeking to adjust their immigration status to obtain green cards must return to their home countries to “do so through consular processing,” in a major change from current practice. (snip)
The statement said that those who come to America on non-immigrant visas, including students, temporary workers and tourists, are expected to be in the United States for a short time and for a specific purpose.
“Our system is designed for them to leave when their visit is over. Their visit should not function as the first step in the Green Card process,” Kahler said.
If I had to bet, this goes directly to Mahmoud Khalil, who came to the US on a student visa at the age of 27 to attend Columbia, then immediately started protesting in favor of Hamas and whipping up hatred of Jews, graduated and stuck around, and the Biden regime switched his visa and gave this terrorist supporter and Jew hater a green card to work. I’m positive he is one of the main reasons for this policy change, which is actually back to the way it used to be. I’d also bet Secretary Of State Marco Rubio spearheaded this.
