Every missile fired, every refinery burned and every pipeline ruptured does more than damage and destroy infrastructure and take human life — it releases vast quantities of greenhouse gases into an already overheated atmosphere. In Tehran, military strikes have turned the sky black and the air caustic, a stark reminder that modern war runs on carbon.
Preliminary modeling and calculations by the Climate and Community Institute estimate that the first 14 days of the current Iran conflict produced more than 5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, an amount equal to a year’s worth of emissions from 1.1 million gas-powered cars.
Emissions will continue as the war goes on, but they will increase exponentially when it is over. Clearing rubble and then rebuilding are the biggest source of emissions in any war. One study estimates greenhouse gas emissions for rebuilding Gaza and Lebanon after the war to be at least 24 times more than those from the war itself.
Just as concerning as increased greenhouse gas emissions from war and the repercussions are the prospect of feverish production of fossil fuels and a return to a greater reliance on coal to meet current and future demand. Roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz before the war shut it down. Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency, has called this the greatest energy security threat in modern history.
The obvious answer from the cult is to top using fossil fuels. Also, to leave the Islamic extremists in Iran and Gaza alone. Who cares if women are treated like chattel: it’s a small price to pay for the Warmists. Well, a small price to pay for Other People. Many of us believe that Ukraine should have every right to defend itself, without wanting the United States involved in it. Many of us wish that the US and Israel hadn’t attacked Iran, and wish that the Persian people had overthrown their government themselves, but are happy enough that the regime has been seriously degraded even if not happy about the means.
A lot of people are harping on this, but Taiwan is roughly 100 miles from China, but over 6,000 miles from our west coast. China’s active duty military is estimated at between 2.0 and 2.2 million soldiers strong, with over 3 million when reserves are included. It has to be asked: how could we support and defend Taiwan if China invaded?
The West made the decision to help Ukraine defend itself. Would an unrestrained Russia stop at taking Ukraine? That was a fear.
Would Putin challenge feckless NATO (with Putin’s puppet in charge) by moving on Estonia, Latvia and/or Lithuania? Would trump support the defense of the Baltics? Of course not.
Yet, MAGAts have rallied behind trump’s stupid unplanned Iran war. And our new Ministry of War (and the recipients of their largesse – defense contractors) wants another $200 BILLION. For starters.
