    By the numbers:

    The (State) department is sending layoff notices to 1,107 civil servants and 246 foreign service officers with domestic assignments in the United States, a senior State Department official told The Associated Press.

    Foreign service officers affected will be placed immediately on administrative leave for 120 days, after which they will formally lose their jobs, according to an internal notice obtained by The Associated Press. For most affected civil servants, the separation period is 60 days, it said.

    The Archdiocese of Miami is condemning a controversial migrant detention facility in Florida — which state officials have named “Alligator Alcatraz” — calling it “unbecoming of public officials” and “corrosive of the common good.”

    In a strongly worded statement posted to the archdiocese’s website, Archbishop Thomas Wenski criticized both the conditions at the remote detention site in the Everglades and the rhetoric surrounding it.

    He wrote: “It is unbecoming of public officials and corrosive of the common good to speak of the deterrence value of ‘alligators and pythons’ at the Collier-Dade facility.”

    The Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday accused Edwin Brant Frost IV, a high-profile Republican in Georgia, of running a Ponzi scheme that defrauded 300 investors of at least $140 million.

    The civil complaint, filed in a federal court in Georgia, accused Mr. Frost of violating antifraud laws and misappropriating investor money via the firm he founded, First Liberty Building and Loan.

    It also accused Mr. Frost, 67, a donor to Republican causes and a prominent backer of the party in Georgia, of using investor funds to give more than $570,000 in political donations. It did not say to whom.

    What dummkopf in the SEC thought it was a good idea to investigate this? And of course it’s a “civil complaint”. Rich white guys are not a threat.

    A farm worker died on Friday from injuries that he sustained a day earlier in raids on two California cannabis farm sites as US immigration authorities confirmed they arrested 200 workers after a tense standoff with authorities.

    Jaime Alanis’s death was confirmed in a social media post by the United Farm Workers advocacy group. “We tragically can confirm that a farm worker has died of injuries they sustained as a result of yesterday’s immigration enforcement action,” the post read.

    The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that authorities executed criminal search warrants in Carpinteria and Camarillo, California, on Thursday. They arrested immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally and there were also at least 10 immigrant children on site, the statement said.

    Four US citizens were arrested for “assaulting or resisting officers”, the department said.

          Speaking of swindling, on a review, a customer accused a salesperson at Leith Honda in Raleigh NC of cheating him! This was an actual customer with an actual complaint of swindling!!

          I had an overall good experience working with P.G. to purchase a used vehicle. I would’ve given this a 5 star rating for the service and experience, but I feel like I was lied to. My trade had an open recall, so they offered me a lower amount than I would’ve like. P.G. told me the car couldn’t be resold with the open recall and there were no parts to fix the recall, so it would have to go to auction. That made sense to me, so I accepted the trade value they offered. Today, I saw my trade-in for sale on their website. Looks like it didn’t have to go to auction after all. Maybe that’s just the car business, but integrity and honesty mean a lot to me.
