Climate Change Increases Gun Violence Incidents in the United States
Hotter temperatures increase the risks of violence and aggression, including incidents of gun violence.
Climate Central analysis shows how temperatures boosted by human-caused climate change contributed to the number of gun violence incidents from 2021–2025 in 100 U.S. cities.
More than 1,900 incidents of gun violence were attributed to heat driven by climate change, out of the nearly 116,300 shootings that occurred during this time period.
Researchers have consistently found that the risks of aggression and violence — including firearms incidents — increase with temperature. The exact causal links between high temperatures and aggressive or violent behavior aren’t fully understood; however, both theory and observations have found that heat can trigger aggression by activating the regions of the brain responsible for emotional regulation and by increasing adrenaline. Researchers also hypothesize that warmer weather could increase the number of interactions between people and, as a result, increase the number of opportunities for conflict and violence.
Rising temperatures driven by human-caused climate change have the potential to amplify the risk of aggressive and violent behavior and, in turn, increase the number of shootings.
There is no such thing as gun violence: it’s people violence, they just happen to use guns. And there is no doubt that violence outside of the home peaks when it gets hotter. But, a 1.7F increase since 1850 is a nothingburger. Of course, the big cities where most shootings occur are warming due to UHI. It really just goes to show that the climate cult wants to involve themselves in everything.
If warming causes violence, it seems grossly unfair to imprison people for it. The planet should be locked up instead.
I wonder if heat also triggers people to do productive things, like exercise, maintaining their yards, and work longer hours for pay that they then save for a rainy day. Climate activists never talk about the benefits of higher global temperatures, just the catastrophes that are always 7-10 years away.
Perhaps some people get more violent, and other people get more relaxed. Lots of people flee their winter homes and go to homes in warmer climates and many others take vacations to the beaches and tropical cruises. They don’t seem to all become violent. Maybe research should look into what sort of people is prone to violence and do something about them instead of trying to fix the whole planet as if it has a single thermostat on it somewhere and an owner’s manual that prescribes a specific temperature as “best” and a red line for “do not exceed”.
Maybe if the temperatures were 5-10 degrees higher, millions of seniors and Canadians wouldn’t need to flee their northern homes or burn massive amounts of carbon-based fuels to stay warm. Maybe researchers could put some effort into finding what the right equilibrium point is for public policy instead of just recommending more funding.
Many factors contribute to violence – poverty, racism, climate, seasons, cheap guns, sexism, inequality, brain damage, illness, testosterone, drugs & alcohol, abuse & neglect and most white-collar crime/corruption is spawned by greed & entitlement!
The United States does not consider the triggers of violent crime when setting bail. We do not excuse murderers (90% male) because of the effects of testosterone on their psyche.
The DOJ says white-collar crime/corruption costs the US some $426 billion to $1.7 trillion per year!! Street crime, twice as much!
