It’s almost like it is a horrendous idea to give tons of taxpayer money to private entities with zero oversight, who basically just enrich themselves
An LA nonprofit bankrolled with millions in taxpayer funds through mayoral candidate Nithya Raman’s eviction-defense program more than tripled its revenue in five years, even as reported housing and eviction-defense spending plunged, a California Post investigation found.
The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) saw its annual revenue soar from $17.6 million in 2019 to $58.6 million in 2024, while its net assets doubled to nearly $44 million, according to its IRS returns.
But City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto’s office found that LAFLA’s reported housing and eviction-defense spending plunged from $17.6 million in 2022 to $4.4 million in 2024.
Feldstein Soto is now demanding a full audit, warning that $55 million to $87 million in city and county funding cannot be reconciled with the nonprofit’s public financial records.
Unfortunately, this is the norm. What isn’t normal is Government looking for accountability, so, I suspect Karen Bass might have something to do with siccing the LA Attorney’s Office on the LAFLA. Democrats should all remember that, sure, most of this graft and slush ends up in the hands of Democrat entities, with some being fed back to Democrat politicians, but, imagine what could be done if the money was actually spent wisely and on what it was supposed to be spent on.
Like Marco Rubio said, only about 20% of the money USAID dealt around actually went to the stated purpose. What if we spent all of it on the stated purpose? It also points out that spending could be cut tremendously and still get the job done.
