Climate change fuels more intense tropical system impacts
We are in the peak of hurricane season. While the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season has been historically quiet, experts say that climate change is partially responsible for more intense tropical system impacts over the years.
Climate change is also increasing the amount of moisture available to hurricanes. Warmer air can hold more water vapor, which can contribute to heavier rainfall. That increases the potential for flooding, including areas well inland from where a hurricane makes landfall. (snip)

Atlantic hurricane season nears historic milestone
Hurricane season has now entered the month of September, and the Atlantic will be entering what is typically its busiest stretch.
But so far this year, we still have not had a single Atlantic hurricane form. That will put 2026 within striking distance of some pretty unusual hurricane history.
Looking at the satellite era, which begins in 1966, the latest date the Atlantic has seen its first hurricane of the season was Sept. 11. That record has happened twice: first in 2002 with Hurricane Gustav, and again in 2013, with Hurricane Humberto.

My paternal grandmother was from Mau’i, and though we lived in California, she wanted to make sure that I learned and knew the names of the main Hawai’ian islands. The recent hurricane tracked slightly to the west of the island, so it should have been harder hit than Kaua’i, but there have been no weather reports I have seen concerning damage.
