Qatar has shut down it’s helium (He) production. Helium is an inert gas, atomic mass of 4, low boiling point, low density. Qatar produces over 1/3rd the world’s He, which is used in:
MRI Machines & Cryogenics: cools superconducting magnets in MRI scanners and NMR spectrometers.
Semiconductors & Electronics: protective atmosphere in the manufacturing of silicon wafers for computer chips, as well as in the production of fiber optic cables.
Welding: inert shielding gas in arc welding (TIG/MIG) to protect the metal from contamination.
Aerospace & Defense: Pressurizes ground and flight propellant tanks (liquid hydrogen/oxygen) and is used for purging systems in rockets.
Leak Detection: helium is used to detect leaks in high-vacuum equipment, containers, and pipelines.
Breathing Mixtures: Mixed with oxygen (Heliox/Trimix) for deep-sea diving to reduce the risk of nitrogen narcosis and decompression sickness.
Ballooning & Lifting: Used in weather balloons, surveillance blimps, because it is lighter than air and non-flammable.
Scientific Research: Used in particle accelerators and for maintaining low-temperature environments in scientific research.
Hospitals and clinics are being contacted about shortages.
