Re: the Afghan evacuation.
There was no “vetting”. I was there so I know. In many cases, fleeing Afghans destroyed their ID on their way to the airports. They claimed it was to evade Taliban retaliation (partly true). Others saw that their own actual IDs would prevent them from getting on an airplane. Airplane tickets to the West were like golden tickets in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Everyone wanted one and it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to go to the USA or Western Europe free of charge. So, tens of thousands of people with NO ID got onto those airplanes. No one was refused. Once in the West, they could claim to be whoever they wanted. No proof needed.
In the last weeks, it was total chaos. Almost as if someone planned it that way. Like after WW2 when every French man was in “the Resistance”. Suddenly every Afghan was “working for the Americans”. No proof needed, not even being able to speak English.
