Hot Take: Mike Pence Never Dining With Women Without His Wife Violates The Law Or Something

One would think that Vice President Mike Pence having a great relationship with his wife would be cause for celebration. Not in Liberal World, as Voxsplainer Joanna L. Grossman attempts to out-Salon Salon

Vice President Pence’s “never dine alone with a woman” rule isn’t honorable. It’s probably illegal.

This issue was thrust into the news this week when the Washington Post ran a piece on Karen Pence, the wife of our current vice president, and reminded readers of something Mike Pence said in 2002: He does not eat alone with a woman or attend an event where alcohol is being served unless his wife is present. The Twittersphere lit up like a Christmas tree with jokes and rants about Pence’s wife-rule. It’s not clear whether Pence still adheres to this practice, but there are men who do.

As the Atlantic observes, such arrangements are especially common within marriages between religious conservatives of various stripes. (It need not be only men who follow such strictures, but the emphasis is often on male temptation.) On Capitol Hill, where long days and late nights away from the family are part of the job, some Congressmen will not travel alone in a car with a female staffer, the National Journal has reported. Some politicians set gender-neutral rules that have a side effect of keeping them from being alone with women — such as excluding any staff from the office before 7 am or after 7 pm — but others clearly apply special rules to women.

From a practical standpoint, it seems like a wise idea, in order to avoid false accusations of impropriety. And those stories that are “just wondering.” It might have been a wise policy to use for Bill Clinton, especially when the women wear blue dresses. But, hey, we’re in Liberal World, where a personal policy is based on love and religious values

To be sure, a politician’s declining to dine alone with a woman does not fall in the same category as a law partner refusing to work with women (or at least musing about refusing to work with women). Nonetheless, the practice described by Pence in that 2002 interview is clearly illegal when practiced by a boss in an employment setting, and deeply damaging to women’s employment opportunities.

Title VII, which governs workplace discrimination, does not allow employers to treat people differently on the basis of certain protected characteristics, one of which is sex. This means that an employer cannot set the terms and conditions of employment differently for one gender than for the other. This includes any aspect of the relationship between employer and employees — extending to benefits like equal access to the employer.

Good grief. Liberals can always find the dark side of anything. You have a National Post writer linking the Pence’s personal policy to “rape culture.” And Planned Parenthood’s Cecile Richards, one of the last people in America who should ever talk about morals, knocks herself out in complaining.

Pence, like most conservative men, can’t control his base nature with women. It’s good that he recognizes this – it certainly places him a notch above his boss, who feels it OK to grab women by their pussies.

Evidently, Pence made a waiter (he refuses to be served by waitresses) remove the distracting and shapely Mrs. Butterworth’s bottle from the table before he ate.

Pence’s bigger problem is Michael Flynn, who is seeking immunity to tell his story. Pence is the bigger fish. It’s clear that VP Pence lied about what he knew and when in his dealings with the international criminal Flynn. Great job of vetting there, trumpy.

  2. Jeffery says:

A boss that refuses access to female employees because he’s afraid he’ll sexually harass them is in fact discriminating on the basis of gender.

    • Rev.Hoagie® says:

A boss who refuses to dine with any woman be they an employee or not is exercising his Freedom Of Choice which I thought you hypocrite leftists were so in to. A person may choose to dine with any damn person he wants. Now YOU get to choose who people eat with?

      This proves you’re a #FakeAmerican. Traitor.

      • Dana says:

Alas! The left believe in Freedom of Choice on exactly one thing.

As for ” A person may choose to dine with any damn person he wants,” the left left that one in the dust decades ago, when the government decided that all public accommodations, with public accommodations being very broadly defined, must not discriminate in serving based on race. If you choose to dine only with white people, you may choose to do so only in a private residence; you cannot choose this in a restaurant.

      Jeffrey errs:

A boss that refuses access to female employees because he’s afraid he’ll sexually harass them is in fact discriminating on the basis of gender.

No. Perhaps one might be discriminating on the basis of sex, but gender (improperly) refers to how someone ‘feels’ about himself, not his biological sex. Bosses who would keep themselves away from situations in which they might be accused of sexual harassment do not accept the cockamamie notion of ‘gender.’ Bosses are smart enough to know that there are two, and only two, sexes, with a few unfortunate individuals suffering from birth defects.

  3. Dana says:

Clearly, Jeffrey is an idiot. Mr Pence follows the “Billy Graham” rule, which avoids putting hmself in a position in which there could be even an appearance of impropriety, something the left always scream about when it concerns Republicans.

Alas! Given that about half of the left are queers persons of minority sexual orientation, perhaps the Vice President would be better served if he altered his rule to never dine with anyone, male or female, other than his wife, without a third person, a witness, present. ‘Twon’t be long, I suspect, that some leftist male with whom Mr Pence once dined alone will claim that Mr Pence made a sexual advance toward him.

Vox once again proves living and working out of your mom’s moldy and poorly-ventilated basement is not a good idea.

  5. Navyvet says:

My opinion is that VP Pence is being very astute. The first time the enemedia sees Mr. Pence with a female other than his wife, no matter how innocent the situation, they will be screaming 24/7 about an affair. They will search high and low for some female that may have spent a minute or two with alone with Mr. Pence to claim that he hit on them, harassed them, grabbed their kitty, etc, etc, etc. Regardless of facts, his political career would be over…..just like the enemedia and their masters in the Commucrat party wants.

  6. Jeffery says:

Clearly, Dana is an idiot. Unfortunately for us all, Pence is the VP of the US and may on occasion be required to share a meal with an unfortunate woman. While Pence is unlikely to sexually assault a woman as trump has repeatedly, he still needs to serve the US.

Sometimes in business you need to share a meal of a person of the opposite sex. If Pence’s wife can’t trust him to have afternoon tea with a female Prime Minister, why should we trust him?

  7. Jeffery says:

Perhaps Pence is the rare conservative who doesn’t consider women his personal playthings. Or maybe he knows he can’t control his urges around women.

Fox News host Bill O’Reilly and his employer have made payouts totaling about $13 million to five women to settle claims of sexual harassment and other inappropriate behavior, the New York Times reported on Saturday.

Fox News last year agreed to pay $20 million to settle a harassment suit by former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson on behalf of Ailes…

Mindy McGillivray, a 36-year-old Palm Springs, Florida, resident, told the Palm Beach Post that Trump groped her 13 years ago when she was assisting a photographer hired to work a concert at the club. “This was a pretty good nudge. More of a grab,” she said. “It was pretty close to the center of my butt. I was startled.

A former Apprentice contestant, Zervos said Trump first kissed her during a meeting in New York, but she was still interested in getting a job at The Trump Organization. She met Trump for dinner in Los Angeles and says that she was escorted into a room next to where he was getting dressed. Zervos claims he later kissed her “very aggressively and placed his hand on my breast.”
