Qatar has shut down it’s helium (He) production. Helium is an inert gas, atomic mass of 4, low boiling point, low density. Qatar produces over 1/3rd the world’s He, which is used in:

MRI Machines & Cryogenics: cools superconducting magnets in MRI scanners and NMR spectrometers.

Semiconductors & Electronics: protective atmosphere in the manufacturing of silicon wafers for computer chips, as well as in the production of fiber optic cables.

Welding: inert shielding gas in arc welding (TIG/MIG) to protect the metal from contamination.

Aerospace & Defense: Pressurizes ground and flight propellant tanks (liquid hydrogen/oxygen) and is used for purging systems in rockets.

Leak Detection: helium is used to detect leaks in high-vacuum equipment, containers, and pipelines.

Breathing Mixtures: Mixed with oxygen (Heliox/Trimix) for deep-sea diving to reduce the risk of nitrogen narcosis and decompression sickness.

Ballooning & Lifting: Used in weather balloons, surveillance blimps, because it is lighter than air and non-flammable.

Scientific Research: Used in particle accelerators and for maintaining low-temperature environments in scientific research.

Hospitals and clinics are being contacted about shortages.

    Next: rare Earth minerals!!

As I’ve mentioned before, one of the sports we watch is bike races, European bike races. It’s the beginning of the season, and we had the Milano-SanRemo race on yesterday, and there’s some minor league race from Spain on right now. Lots of aerial coverage from helicopters or drones, and one thing I just noticed: even in more-liberal-than-the-US Europe, very few of the houses have solar panels mounted. I’ll occasionally see panels mounted on industrial buildings, but surely, surely! in warmer, sunnier countries like Italy and Spain, where solar panels would be the most useful, I’d have expected more solar panels than I’ve seen.

I’m not sure how even Mr Dowd could blame that on President Trump.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Yet… U.S. per capita emissions are significantly higher, at approximately 17.6 tCO2e per person, compared to the EU’s 7.04 tCO2e per person.

and… The EU has surpassed 400 GW of solar capacity, with solar and wind supplying more power than fossil fuels across the EU in 2025. The US lags in percentage terms, with fossil fuels still dominant in the US energy mix.

EU growth is heavily driven by rooftop installations (61% of operational capacity), whereas the US has historically focused on large-scale utility projects.

      • Dana says:

        The distinguished Mr Dowd wrote:

EU growth is heavily driven by rooftop installations (61% of operational capacity),

So, who am I supposed to believe, Mr Dowd, or my lying eyes?

If rooftop installations are supposed to be the metric, apparently the Terres de l’Ebre region of southwestern Catalonia and the courses of the Milano-SanRemo men’s and women’s races — the courses are different for dudes and chicks — are significant exceptions.

Residential buildings in those areas are predominantly terra cotta tile roofed, and I can see why people wouldn’t want to have solar installations on them: terra Cotta roofing tiles are very hard, and can last hundreds of years, but drilling into them to anchor solar panels would be very likely to crack them.

Perhaps it’s different in the more northerly European areas.

The Senate voted 54-37 during a rare Sunday session to invoke cloture on Mullin’s nomination to succeed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, teeing up a final confirmation vote expected Monday or Tuesday, according to The Hill. While Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman‘s “yes” vote was expected, a second Democrat — New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich — also bucked his party to advance Mullin’s nomination in a surprise development.

Media doesn’t seem too interested in another white chick murdered by an illegal.

An illegal immigrant with a previous criminal record in Chicago (released, of course) is now accused of the infuriating, senseless murder of an innocent college freshman named Sheridan Gorman. “Sanctuary” polices and politicians strike again. How many more, Democrats?

Only covered by NYT, Sun-Times, CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, NYPost etc.

Maybe if ICE actually was finding the “worst of the worst” rather than tracking 6 yr old kids and their moms they would have prevented Ms Gorman’s tragic murder by Jose Medina-Medina.

Unlike Don trump, we do not derive joy from another American’s death. Sheridan Gorman was an 18 year old first year student at Loyola University, a Jesuit school.

Ms Gorman, originally from Yorktown, N.Y., was described by friends and family as compassionate, funny and joyous, The Loyola Phoenix reported. She was a part of Cru, a Christian group on Loyola’s campus.

Loyola held a vigil for her Thursday night where students, faculty and community members filed into Madonna della Strada Chapel to mourn her death. Members of Gorman’s family were present at the service.

Said Loyola President Mark Reed, in part:

      “Dear Loyola Community,

It is with profound sadness that I write to share that one of our students, Sheridan Gorman, was killed earlier today in an incident north of the Lake Shore Campus. This is a tragic loss, and our hearts go out to Sheridan’s family, loved ones, and all who knew her.”

      Anyway… Sheridan Gorman is a person, a daughter, a friend, a student… not just a political pawn.

      • drowningpuppies says:

So according to Rimjob, it’s the fault of ICE and Trump that another young white woman was murdered by an illegal who should have been in jail or deported but we don’t want to make her and her murder a “political pawn”?

        Get the fuck out.
