I love horror movies. Always have. I remember watching horror/monster movies Saturday afternoons out of the NYC channels, always had great ones. And at night they’d run them. I still love them, though, not much scares me anymore. Anyhow, who’s up for the Yute list?
Scientific study reveals scariest horror movie – with one 2026 title breaking heart rate record
The ranking was determined by a study monitoring audience’s heart rates and BPM increases while watching horror films.
Halloween is creeping up and many of you will be wondering: “What should I be watching to get in the mood for the big night?”
Well, if you’re sticking to rigorous scientific research, we can reveal what the scariest films are – with no accounting for taste or your tolerance for jump scares.
The Science of Scare Project, now in its seventh year, tracks the pulses of hundreds of volunteers, who watch hours of English-language horror movies whilst fitted with heart rate monitors.
Their scientific study establishes a Scare Score system, which combines both heart rate (measured in beats per minute – BPM) and heart rate variability (HRV – measured in milliseconds), which measures the time in between each beat of your heart. Peak heart rate is also taken into consideration, with the highest point proving to be a valuable indicator and leading to an overall ranking of the scariest horror movies.
What are they? (below the fold for brevity)
The list goes from 1 at the top
Sinister
Host
Skinamarink
Insidious
The Conjuring
Hereditary
Smile 2
Smile
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
Talk To Me
Hell House LLC
The Conjuring 2
It Follows
The Dark and the Wicked
The Descent
Paranormal Activity
The Babadook
A Quiet Place 2
The Autopsy of Jane Doe
Insidious 2
Now, I am not going to dispute that many of these are scary in some way. Sinister certainly is. I love Hell House LLC (watch the original cut, not the director’s cut), which is about setting a chilling tone and building, rather than jump scares. Insidious and Conjuring movies are OK. Paranormal Activity was just jump scares, not any sort of tone. Couldn’t get more than 10 minutes in on Babadook, the kid character annoyed the snot out of me. Hereditary bored me to tears till her head came off, then, back to boredom, so, when the entire point came around I was half watching.
Jane Doe and It Follows damned good. I’d pick the first A Quiet Place, though. Smile was fantastic, 2 I ended up turning off, hated the main character. Entitled Pop Tart. I was hoping the smile demon would get her early and have a likeable character take over.
But, do you notice something? None are from the 20th Century. Two are from 2005, most are after 2010, and even in the last 10 years. Where are ones like The Exorcist and The Thing? Nosferatu 1922? It used to be more about atmosphere. Though, of course, slashers are more about blood
Check out the full rankings and methodology in detail here.
As we’ve previously noted when it comes to the Science of Scare’s findings, the results are largely dominated by modern horror films which employ jump scares. It tracks considering the methodology is centred around heartbeats; however, many dreadheads and gorehounds consider the ubiquitous cattle-prod tactic to be cheap and an overused ploy to illicit easy frights. They’re great for a quick adrenaline rush, but many would argue that the jump scare startles rather than actually scares.
The thing is, most of the Yutes do not do anything prior to this century.

The ranking was determined by a study monitoring audience’s heart rates and BPM increases while watching horror films.

This is what you get when social scientists all need to conduct rigorous “research” so they can be awarded a PHD and be called “Doctor”.
To be honest, the premise of this “research” seems like a plot from the movie Monsters, Inc. Royalties may be owed.
I’ve seen my fair share of scary movies over the years, but I have to admit I have never heard of any on that list.

hy
I’ve never seen any of those movies and most I’ve never heard of. Im surprised Hitchcock “The Birds” didnt make the list, but then again a photo montage of Kamala’s 2024 campaign didnt either.
I’ve seen, or at least tried, most of them, and there are some good ones, don’t get me wrong. But, it is one of those Yute studies
I figured that the list would be more modern movies. My scariest are a bit older. The original “Night of the Living Dead” and the highly underrated John Carpenter’s “Prince of Darkness”.
